Why We Should Be Concerned About CAIR
While our American homeland since the George Floyd killing has had to deal with riots, looting and killings from right-wing domestic terrorists, such as the Boogaloo movement, as well as those on the left like Antifa and Black Lives Matter (BLM), there is one American-based terrorist-linked group that has thus far managed to slip under the radar, the Council for American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).
Hiding behind the façade of righteousness, CAIR’s “official mission” is “to enhance the understanding of Islam, encourage dialogue, protect civil liberties, empower American Muslims, and build coalitions that promote justice and mutual understanding.” It in fact stands for everything contrary to social justice and racial equality with the goal to curtail our democracy with the sharia.
What tends to be disturbing is that the terrorist-linked CAIR has and continues to receive financial support our own U.S. government.
Funding from U.S. Government
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) last year, for example approved a $100,000 grant using U.S. taxpayer money to CAIR, despite Washington knowing that CAIR actually is an entity founded by the Muslim Brotherhood’s Palestinian franchise, Hamas, a group officially designated since 1994 as a terrorist organization.
The government’s funding of CAIR was the product of the DHS’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This program also provided funds to other Islamist organizations, such as the Muslim American Society (MAS), which received $57,000 — MAS is a national Islamist organization whose Philadelphia branch hosted an event last year at which young children from an MAS-run school recited poetry about the killing of Jews.
Ties to Terrorists and Insurrectionists
The Department of Homeland Security has thus far refused to deal with CAIR as a threat to our national security, to say nothing of its sponsor of international Islamic terror groups, despite concerns from notable figures, even from the Democrat Party:
- Senator Charles (Chuck) Schumer (D- NY) describes CAIR as an organization “which we know has ties to terrorism.”
- Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) observes that CAIR is “unusual in its extreme rhetoric and its associations with groups that are suspect.”
- Steven Pomenrantz, the FBI’s former chief of counterterrorism, notes that “CAIR, its leaders, and its activities effectively give aid to international terrorist groups.
- The family of John P. O’Neill, Sr., the former FBI counterterrorism chief who perished at the World Trade Center, named CAIR in a lawsuit as having “been part of the criminal conspiracy of radical Islamic terrorism” responsible for the September 11, 2001, atrocities. Counterterrorism expert Steven Emerson calls it “a radical fundamentalist front group for Hamas.”
In 2007, the Justice Department designated CAIR as an unindicted co-conspirator during the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, a Muslim Brotherhood front that was financing Hamas until it was shut down.
Evidence of CAIR’s true character as a U.S.-based instrument for political warfare and fundraising for Hamas — and the federal government’s certain knowledge of the truth — did not come to light until the aforementioned Holy Land trial. In the course of the hearings, FBI Agent Laura Burns testified about the wiretap and surveillance transcripts of two planning sessions held in Philadelphia in October 1993 and leading up to the organizational meeting of CAIR. Specifically, she presented proof that CAIR’s mission was to assist “Sister Samah,” its founders’ hardly opaque code-name for Hamas, as the prospect of its terror designation loomed.
Some of its employees and board members have also been charged with terrorism, such as Randall (“Ismail”) Royer. An American convert to Islam, served as CAIR’s communications specialist and civil rights coordinator; today he sits in jail on terrorism-related charges.
While CAIR’s right hand may be the Muslims Brotherhood, its left hand is BLM — its pawn on the American frontline. As Nihad Awad, CAIR executive director, stated: “Black Lives Matter is our campaign.”

Back in 2015, it joined BLM in a march on the California State Capitol, targeting then-Governor Jerry Brown’s office over a bill that, in part, would have expanded bans on racial profiling to include perceived ethnicity.
CAIR’s defenders had argued that its associations with Islamic extremism can be overlooked because it helps law enforcement work with, and within, the Muslim community.
Yet by supporting the BLM, a movement that has revealed itself to incite hatred, violence and insurrection, CAIR has further shown its contempt for American law enforcement and our freedom to exercise our God-given inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
The fact that CAIR has merged and shares the same destructive ideology and agenda with insurrectionists like BLM — to destroy America as we know it — should give us all pause. What is worse, to quote Lisa Michelle, Co-Founder and Managing Editor at America’s Civil War Rising, “both left-wing and conservative circles continue to legitimize and normalize these groups and capitulate to their demands — bending knees to unknown gods and imposing a form of sharia law onto themselves but under the guise of civil rights and justice.”
Support from Neo-conservative and Left-wing Politicians
Days after the 9/11 tragedies, President George W. Bush visited the Islamic Center of Washington, DC, to signal that he would not tolerate a backlash against Muslims. He invited Nihad Awad, to join him at the podium. Two months later, when Secretary of State Colin Powell hosted a Ramadan dinner, he, too, called upon CAIR as representative of Islam in America. More broadly, when the State Department sought out Muslims to welcome foreign dignitaries, journalists, and academics, it relied on CAIR.
Last year CAIR received the approval and support from numerous Democrat lawmakers, including vice presidential hopeful Kamala Harris. And while the organization had differences in the past with presidential hopeful Joe Biden, the former vice president asked for CAIR’s endorsement.
Speaking via Webinar on July 20, Biden addressed the “Million Muslim Votes” summit, sponsored by a Muslim Brotherhood operation called Emgage Action, another Muslim Brotherhood-linked Political Action Committee that endorsed Biden back in April 2020. Omitted by the mainstream media is the fact that Emgage Action’s parent organization, Emgage USA, is a front group for CAIR.
Just as the Muslim Brotherhood, CAIR has yet to be designated as a terrorist group by the Trump administration. This does not mean that President Donald Trump is unaware of CAIR’s jihadist notions. When he hosted the Islamic Iftar dinner at the White House last year, he made sure that CAIR was not invited — and for good reason.
In 1915, President Woodrow Wilson warned against hyphenated Americans — the then-anarchists — who, he charged, had “poured the poison of disloyalty into the very arteries of our national life. Such creatures of passion, disloyalty and anarchy must be crushed out.” The same must be done with CAIR and its supporters, especially as as both the presidential and congressional elections draw near.
