Why the United Nations is a Threat to American Values and Geopolitical Interests
The United Nations was founded with the promise of fostering peace and cooperation, but in reality, it has become an organization that supports dictatorships and oppression, and undermines American values and geopolitical interests. Observing the failures of the UN on every ground, and their consequences on the global stage, I am convinced that the United States’ continued support for this organization is not only misguided but counterproductive. It’s time to acknowledge the failures of the UN and explore alternatives that better serve the principles of democracy and freedom.
A Platform for Anti-Americanism
The UN’s structure, which grants equal voting power to all member states regardless of their political systems, has turned it into a forum where America is frequently maligned. Dictatorships and authoritarian regimes, many of which actively oppose the values of freedom and democracy, exploit the UN’s platform to criticize and obstruct American policies. This anti-American sentiment is not just rhetorical; it translates into real actions that hinder the United States’ ability to promote peace and security.
Consider the UN’s Human Rights Council, where some of the worst human rights offenders—such as Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and China—have held seats. These regimes use their positions to shield themselves and their allies from criticism while attacking democratic nations, especially the United States and its allies. Instead of being a beacon of human rights, the council has become a stage for hypocrisy and moral relativism.
The Hijacking of the UN by China and Russia
China and Russia, two of the UN’s five permanent Security Council members, have consistently used their veto power to protect their interests and those of their client states. These nations prop up dictatorial regimes worldwide, ensuring their survival in exchange for economic and political loyalty. From Syria’s Bashar al-Assad to North Korea’s Kim Jong-un, tyrants remain in power largely because of the backing they receive from these authoritarian superpowers.
China and Russia’s influence extends beyond the Security Council. They have worked to dominate various UN agencies, turning them into tools for advancing their agendas. For example, China’s growing influence in the World Health Organization during the COVID-19 pandemic raised serious concerns about the impartiality and effectiveness of the organization. Such manipulations undermine the credibility of the UN and expose its structural vulnerabilities.
Financial Inequities and Lack of Accountability
The United States is the largest financial contributor to the UN, funding 22% of its regular budget and 25% of its peacekeeping budget. This amounts to billions of dollars annually, yet the return on this investment is negligible or nill. American taxpayers are essentially subsidizing an organization that frequently opposes their country’s interests.
The financial inequities are exacerbated by the lack of accountability within the UN. Corruption scandals, inefficiencies, and waste are rampant, with little to no consequences for those responsible. For example, the Oil-for-Food Program in the early 2000s became one of the largest scandals in UN history, with billions of dollars lost to fraud and corruption. Such incidents demonstrate the systemic issues that plague the organization.
The UN’s Failure to Uphold Its Principles
The UN’s inability to enforce its own principles is perhaps its most damning flaw. While it claims to champion peace and human rights, it has consistently failed to address egregious violations. Authoritarian regimes routinely escape sanctions, while democracies like Israel are disproportionately targeted. Israel, the only democracy in the Middle East, has faced a barrage of biased resolutions in the General Assembly, while oppressive regimes like the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria are spared similar scrutiny.
This double standard not only undermines the UN’s credibility but also emboldens dictatorships. By shielding tyrants and punishing democracies, the organization perpetuates a global system that is inherently unjust and unsustainable.
Introducing the Democratic Nations Alliance for Peace and Prosperity (DNAPP)
The failures of the United Nations are not just flaws; they are intrinsic to its structure and purpose. Reforming the UN is not a viable option, as its foundational principles place democracies and dictatorships on equal footing. The only solution is to replace it with an organization that truly reflects the values of freedom and democracy.
I propose the Democratic Nations Alliance for Peace and Prosperity (DNAPP), a new international organization composed exclusively of democratic nations. DNAPP would address the inherent flaws of the UN and provide a more effective framework for international cooperation.
How DNAPP Would Work
- Membership Based on Democracy: Only nations with free elections, freedom of speech, and equal rights for all citizens would qualify for membership. This ensures that the organization’s actions align with its values.
- Weighted Voting Power: Voting within DNAPP would be democratically weighted, with more voting power granted to countries that score higher on a Democracy Index. This system incentivizes member states to enhance their democratic credentials, fostering a race to the top.
- Mutual Defense: DNAPP would include a robust mutual defense agreement, protecting its members against aggression from authoritarian regimes. Unlike NATO, which is compromised by the inclusion of semi-authoritarian states like Turkey under Erdogan, DNAPP would ensure that only democracies benefit from its protections.
- Economic and Humanitarian Cooperation: DNAPP would promote economic collaboration among its members, creating a prosperous bloc of democracies. It would also coordinate humanitarian relief efforts during natural disasters, ensuring swift and effective responses.
- Accountability and Reform: By excluding dictatorships, DNAPP would expose authoritarian regimes and create pressure for democratic reforms. Nations outside the alliance would face diplomatic and economic isolation, incentivizing them to embrace democracy.
The Path Forward
Critics may argue that leaving the UN would isolate the United States. On the contrary, withdrawing from the UN and leading the formation of DNAPP would reaffirm America’s commitment to its values. The United States has always been a beacon of freedom and democracy, and it should champion a new international order that reflects these principles.
The UN has had nearly eight decades to prove its worth, yet it remains a platform for dictatorships to undermine democracies. Continuing to support such an organization is not just a waste of resources; it is a betrayal of the ideals that America stands for. It’s time to recognize the UN for what it is: an irredeemable institution that perpetuates injustice and inequality.
DNAPP represents a bold and necessary alternative. By uniting democracies and excluding dictatorships, it offers a path to a more just and prosperous world. The United States should take the lead in building this new alliance, proving once again that it is the world’s greatest champion of freedom and democracy.
In my forthcoming book, “The Un-tide Nations: United in Oppression”, I have explained in detail why the UN is a force for evil and how DNAPP can provide peace and prosperity to the world,
