Can anybody fill me in on the Falun Gong in China? I know virtually nothing about their ideology or beliefs and would be grateful for any kind of information.

Falun Gong is invented by a middle-aged Chinese man called Li Hongzhi. His so-called religious doctrines are a mixture of collections of a purposefully distorted Buddhist/Taoist teachings and religious terms, as well as incorporated some self-invented 'Qi Gong' meditation exercises.

Fa Lun is a borrowed term from Buddhism, meaning the "The Wheel of Ways" (please pardon my poor English Translation). Gong means the "Martial Arts/Exercise". Da Fa means the "Great Way".

This man is a swindler. Before the invention of Fa Lun Gong, he actually pretended to be a Qi-Gong (a type of exercise thru meditation/coordinated breathing/martial arts) expert who can cure all kinds of sickness thru means of releasing of "Qi" onto the patient bodies. But that doesn't really worked for him (unable to cure sickness & amass profits).

So he invented a new kind of so-called off-branch Buddhism called Fa Lun Da Fa. His main doctrines are that he claimed himself as a living Buddha, and even higer than all the Buddhas & Gods. He claimed that soon the doomsday of Earth will be near, and the only way for the soul to liberate from the final doomsday will be through the correct way of Fa Lun Da Fa meditation exercise.

His doctrines attracted large numbers (in the millions) of believers, mainly because in China, after the collaspe of the Mao's Communistic system of moral values and also the lack (systemtically destroyed during Mao's Cultural Revolution) of nearly all good traditional Chinese virtues & moral values, many Chinese are at a loss in the true meanings of life, especially for those people who can't adapt and lost out in the fast-paced capitalistic pro-materialistic pressures that brought to their personal lifes.

The worse is that many of them praticed Li Hongzhi meditation exercise. Li is defintely not a martial arts expert, his invention of the Fa Lun Gong meditation exercise brought great harms to people who praticed it. Most people who praticed it got hallucinations, that they believe they sense the existence of a Fa Lun spinning in their bodies & they're about to Sheng Tian (ascending to heaven) and joined the ranks of Buddhas. Mentally unstable people commit suicides & also killed their own family members.

Li Hongzi through his Fa Lun Gong 'business' (belivers buying all sorts of Fa Lun Da Fa holy scriptures/books/pictures and make donations) amass huge profits, money is what he is really after.

The ban on Fa Lun Gong by Chinese Government is correct & well supported by the Chinese, although I don't agree with the ways they treated the Fa Lun Gong members as political activists and the non-transparent legistive process.

Fa Lun Gong is the result of a greedy man who make use of the weaknesses of people who seek spiritual refuge in religious beliefs.
