You probably watched 60 minutes on CBS in early May. I thought I'd post the link to the show : Refuseniks
Here's the link to the show:
Looking for hope in the middle east? Look no further than this Israeli Website. The "core of the Israeli society, the military" is its major hope for peace and return to humanity. They've already received my support, I hope they can receive yours too.
Numbers by rank:
230 Staff Sergeants
50 Sergeants, First Class
32 Sergeants
4 Privates
18 Majors
75 Lieutenants
1 First Sergeant
15 Corporals
41 Captains
Numbers by unit:
50 Paratroopers
20 Navy
53 Other
20 Medicine Corps
95 INFANTRY
30 Engineering
46 Artillery
18 Army Intelligence
99 Armored Corps
32 Air Force
| Quote: | "Why would a regular guy like me get up one morning in the middle of life, work, the kids, and decide he's not playing the game anymore?"
(Assaf Oron, Sergeant First Class, Infantry, Israel Defense Forces)
Why would this Israeli reservist, who has fought to defend his country, risk arrest and imprisonment, loss of income, damage to family, abandonment by friends?
Because, says Assaf and almost 500 other reservists, "We shall not continue to fight beyond the 1967 borders in order to dominate, expel, starve and humiliate an entire people." And by speaking out, by having the courage to refuse, these brave reservists have launched a debate throughout Israel and re-energized the Israeli peace movement. They are making a difference, but they need our help to increase their impact and numbers. |

But Human, where are the Palestinian/Muslim equivalents of the "Refuseniks"?
There will be no peace until both sides want it. |

Consider me one of them , dear Susan. Such voices are much more muted in the Arab world. If we dare speak out, we're collaborators and traitors. We're not just jailed for a week or two, but we're executed, and our families are prosecuted. We're definitly much less organized and less media getters, since we do not belong to one army. The louder the Israeli Refusenicks are, the more distinguished our hesitating screams will become...As far as I'm concerned, there is no better way out of this human misery we came to call : The cause of Palestine. |

I recognize the difficulty of your position and I'm awed by your efforts so far
The trouble is, the time is growing short, and many on the hardline pro-Israel side of the equation do not believe that any of you exist. . .I hope your voices go stronger, but please, I do hope they grow stronger very very fast. |

Dear human,
I think there are more people like yourself than you and Susan realize, I know people are hesitant but I hear the moderate or "middle class educated" Arabian voice rather often lately...
Palestinian reform
"Deborah Amos reports from Ramallah that out of the destruction of last month's Israeli offensive into the Palestinian cities, there is awareness that Yasser Arafat's past policies and rule have failed. Many are eager for democratic reform, but whether that will happen anytime soon remains unclear."
I listen to NPR at the office all day. I heard a decent historical primer on the "cause" last week. "The World" Special - A Middle East History
I know it lacks all the excruciating minutia but it's real enough for an hour's worth of radio. _________________ "—to find one's happiness in truth, to oppose illusion, to value integrity above God, and character above salvation." |
