Nearly every European country has much higher suicide rates than the United States. Even socialist paradise Canada has higher rates.

I expect that the European rate will climb to the extremely high levels that the Ukraine has as Europe's enconomy continues its spiral downward.

Well. the US is hardly a stand-out in those numbers either, but neither are we the misery-racked society depicted by the beloved al-Garbagian either. I'm sure Spinoza will happy to point out that Holland has a lower suicide rate than the US. But wow, those Belarusians and Finns must be miserable!

I actually think that the higher rates of suicide in those extreme Northern countries have a lot to due with lack of sunlight during the long winter months. It's been proven that deprivation of sunlight causes severe depression in many humans.

So I don't think you can say it's due to "socialism."

See, I'm fair. Wink Unlike certain people on this forum, who would never be generous enough to grant me a single point in our "debates."

The number out of 100,000 seems to very almost the same in most of those countries listed.

Europe has had consistantly higher suicide rates than the U.S. for decades at least. The weather is a factor contributing to the rate but only one of the many factors.

Just as in the poverty statistics, there is a variation in how the data is compiled from country to country. For instance, in Japan, if a father kills his family and then himself, they count all the members of the family as suicide victims instead of murder victims.

In the Netherlands, people who chose euthanasia if they're dying from a disease are not counted as a suicide. Here in states, people killing themselves due to a disease are still counted as suicide.

You are absolutely right. How good of you to notice that the top of that list is pretty much dominated by ex soviet republics and warshaw pact countries. (and there's Japan and Sri Lanka)

LITHUANIA 45,85
RUSSIAN FEDERATION 41,25
BELARUS 36,55
LATVIA 34,25
UKRAINE 31,05
SRI LANKA 30,7
SLOVENIA 30,35
HUNGARY 30,05
ESTONIA 28,85
KAZAKHSTAN 27,5
JAPAN 25,3

As you can see there's no Western European Country in that list, and the States have about the rate of the avarage Western European countries. Some like the Netherlands are a bit lower, some are quite a bit higher (like France or Sweden)

Yep that's true: and that's why Philips invented a regular light bulb with a hint of UV in it. As you can see, the nothern European countries have a far higher rate of suicide then those in the south. I can imagine that Minnesotans kill themselves a bit more then Texans too.

Well, the rate seems really high in those coutries that actually *were* socialist (East block and former Soviet states) So there dire economic state may have something to do with it.

Actually Finland scored about the same as Latvia, although it's debateable whether it's Western Europe or not. It has always been included in the West as far as I know.

Assissted Suicide is legal here in Oregon. The only state in the U.S. it is. And the first place in the world to make it legal.

The crime rate in the US today is the lowest in 30 years. The NUMBER of violent crimes have declined by 30 percent since 1973, despite the fact that the US population has increased by 100 million people since then.

New York City has a lower crime rate than London:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3223915.stm

PS 2.3 mllion prisoners doesn't seem like a huge amount of prisoners for a nation of 300 million people. That is about .66 of one percent of the entire population.

Well, Finland is one of those nothern (dark in the winter) countries and allways was a bit of 'both' (the Soviets were all around them).
