As I'm trying to write this, little Daisy, is pulling my hand down from the keyboard. Her real boss, my 14 year old daughter is away on vacation and so she's not getting enough attention.

Years back, when I lived in the USA and had a back yard I had a blue-eyed Husky, called Nicky. The most tirelessly playful thing in God's creation. Except for my college days I've always had dogs, most of the time two at once. Mopsy, half poodle half terrier, Jeff (actually Jefferson because we found him in the year of the American bi-centennial), wired-hair something or other, Butch and Willy, brothers, "almost" Maremma sheepdogs and now Toby, labradorish, big and dopey, but very sweet and fiercely protective and little Daisy. My daughter says she looks like a Border Collie, so in light of Daisy's many dubious ancestors, we invented a new race: Bordel(lo) Collie.

Dogs and pets in general are about love and happiness so of course the very serious and sober Mohammadans would be against them... and anyway it's written in their books so that's the end of thought and the beginning of bannable hate crimes. To varying degrees, if you don't agree with the rules, customs and mores of the Sahara Desert year approx. 650 AD, becoming a hater is inevitable.

So no Lassies coming home in the Ummah, no Rexes catching bad guys, no seeing-eye dogs in taxicabs.

I guess the mutts might get disrespectful when their bosses are all bending down with their butts in the air. In fact, chances are they'd start barking: "Hey what's going on?!" Or sniffing where they shouldn't. Or howling if the muezzin's amplified voice hits a certain metallic pitch.

I would miss the big festa both Toby and Daisy give me when I come home. And the really BIG BIG festa when my wife comes home. They start going crazy when she's still half a kilometer away, 'cause they know the engine sound. So it's not just Burglar alarm but advance happiness warning. And it's real happiness, never mind that it might be connected to soon being fed. Who cares?
