I've often wondered about Muslims and perfume. Many deodorants and perfumes contain alcohol.
Are these halal as they aren't actually being consumed as food/drink or is the alcohol making contact with the skin enough to make them haram? _________________ What the world needs is not dogma but an attitude of scientific inquiry combined with a belief that the torture of millions is not desirable, whether inflicted by Stalin or by a Deity imagined in the likeness of the believer. - Bertrand Russell. |

| You pose an interesting question. I also want to know why some ladies with a Hijab wear lipstik and make up. |

Perfume is not forbidden in islam cause its haram to drink not wear alcohol. Its actually mustahabb for women to wear perfume for their husband. Of course its HARAM to wear it outside amongs men cause it could attract men.....and that would be fitnah.
Nevertheless its not haram for MEN to wear perfume outside.
Yet, men and women are equal in islam. Sure they are....

Thank you for the information, fool i was.
You're no longer a fool, in fact information like this is highly valuable. _________________ What the world needs is not dogma but an attitude of scientific inquiry combined with a belief that the torture of millions is not desirable, whether inflicted by Stalin or by a Deity imagined in the likeness of the believer. - Bertrand Russell. |

Pretty much contradiction in your above statement. Women and men are not equal in Islam. You are still a fool |

or is the alcohol making contact with the skin enough to make them haram?
According to the scholars, no. Perfume made with alcohol is not haram, as one is not consuming it. One cannot become intoxicated.
However, some ordinary Muslims imagine that it might be. Traditional Arab perfumes (which are rich and heavy in scent) are made with pure oil, no alcohol, and are often seen as more "Islamic". But this is just a question of style. _________________ O learn to read what silent love hath writ:

That's odd. I heard about a conflict that arose when Muslims were refusing to wash their hands with alcohol before entering a critical care unit in a hospital. How can disinfecting your hands be haram, but wearing perfume be halal?
If it's not haram to come into contact with alcohol, why are Somali cab drivers in Michigan having a fit over even carrying alcohol in their cabs, even if it's in the trunk?
Methinks Muslims like to make up the rules as they go. Less strict when it benefits them, and more strict if it ticks off a few kafirs. |

I wont try to find logic behind theory and practice of Islamic laws.
I heard some muslims wont take even modern medicines as they contain products derived from alcohol. Many refuse insulin if its derived from guts of pigs. |

Most scholars say that its ok to wear perfume that consists of less alcohol than 10% or something like that, not sure. Of couse there are always groups who have their own personal rules. |
