|
|
I am a member another site that has what i think is a good sub forum for us to use.
Being reluctant to ban trolls, but not wanting them to continue to mess up important threads this would be an excellent idea.
They have a sub forum called 'Purgatory' and trolls get banished to it. Whilst banished these trolls are not allowed to access the everyday part of the forum or any of the other ones.
Their threads only appear in purgatory too, so you have to actually visit it to converse with them.
You could set a sentence of a month, with time off for good behaviour or time added.
This way the trolls are still here, can not claim they were banned, and for those of us who enjoy the flame wars, we can enter at our own peril.
What do you think DT, can we do this, is this a good plan?
It really is good, right now at this site Rizzwan is stuck in purgatory and unlikely to get out anytime soon.
I really enjoy the forum software of this other site. |

I am not sure about this idea, Sahara. It does mean giving more attention to trolls and their behaviour, soon they will think that it's cool to go in the Purgatory. Giving attention to issues rather than members is good for this forum.
Besides I think M does a good job, and there really isn't any need for "quarantine" for trolls. They get three warnings before they are banned, it is sufficient IMO.
just my two cents. |

Hi Sahara.
Our forum software doesn't have the ability to box a user into only one or more forums. If this were possible then the moderators would probably have done this with masadi. I won't get into the boring details of how the forum permissions work.
By the way, do you know what kind of forum software that other site is using? I'm just curious... |

I have sent a pm with the link to the other forum DT. Let me know what you think of it please.
@Miss Ruby
Perhaps, but Rizzwan is not handling being prisoned very well. The trolls long to join in some of the threads going on, but because of their status they can't, it truly frustrates them.
These trolls that we ban at FFI come back again and again as new members. if they still had purgatory would they keep doing that? |

Ciao Sahara,
I agree with Ruby on this. It's really not that hard, even with rather wicked or extreme opinions to be and remain a member of the forum. We've got M and their three warnings.
Anyway, DT, (may all the Hindu Saints guard over his wisdom), says it's not possible with the present software... and that would distract his saintly and on-going effort to re-implement the search function (may the spirit of the great Confucian mathematicians guide him). _________________ </islam> Whenever you guys shout "Allah Akbar" I find myself ducking for the floor - Haik Monsieur |

Nothing, nothing at all. But you seem more concerned with insulting females than fighting islam. |

Sahara: I wish the forum software could accomodate this great idea! I was actually thinking about something along these lines too!

I am glad someone else liked it too.
Sadly DT says that although this kind of software was on the table, it's not really going to be any better.
DT, should we have a poll and then a whip around to purchase the software? It really is such an easy forum and with so many features. |

Yep, that's it. Sahara has already PM'd me about this. We had considered switching to vBulletin when we were trying to find a long term solution to the database search problem, but we found postings on the vBulletin support forum indicating that they have the same problems. In the end, it just boils down to the size of the database vs the amount of RAM on the server.
There were other factors about vBulletin we weren't excited about. For example, it costs $160 for the first year's license, and $30 per year thereafter (there's a less expensive lease option, but it doesn't reduce after the first year). Since we have six forums in various languages, it would have taken some serious fundraising to come up with the cash.
The moderators and forum admins also weren't too keen on having to learn their way around a whole new software package. It's sort of "the devil you know vs the devil you don't". We know phpBB pretty well by now. We've even made a few custom modifications to our forum software. We'd have to give that up if we switched to vBulletin, or any other forum software package.
Me!
Everyone on this forum with more than one word in their nick ends up being called by their initials. Unfortunately, your nick has only one word so you won't get an abbreviated handle, though I did notice one member who used your nick as a prefix and began appending suffixes to it.
The reason Sahara and others ask me about technical stuff is because I'm the digital janitor around here. |
