The 21st-Century Slave Narrative of Francis Bok

And by creating an account through IGive.com, you can designate a portion of the proceeds to support the work of AASG.

...He looked at me and said, "You want to know why no one loves you and why you must sleep with the animals?... I make you sleep with the animals... because you ARE an animal..."

It certainly explained a lot about my situation: why he let the kids whip me with sticks as they would a stubborn donkey, why they fed me garbage from their table, why they left me to sleep alone in an evrik that was no better than an animal pen...

I now knew that life would never get better for me with these people. I would have to find a way to leave.

That was the moment when I began planning my escape.

-Escape from Slavery, autobiography of Francis Bok.

In this groundbreaking modern slave narrative, Francis Bok shares his remarkable story of being enslaved for 10 years as a child in Sudan. His memoir is the modern-day counterpart to that of 19th century slave-turned-abolitionist Frederick Douglas: He chronicles his escape, his journey to a new life, and his rise to becoming a key figure in the modern anti-slavery movement, even meeting with the president of the United States.

In case muslims start repeating their islamic chant about slavery and racism in non-islamic/western societies again, point them to this article:

(from a muslim-site, written by a muslim)

Blasphemy Before God: The Darkness of Racism In Muslim Culture
By Adam Misbah al-Haqq
http://www.mpacuk.org/mpac/data/1d44a1ff/1d44a1ff.jsp
(some quotes)
Quote:
...
In 889 AH, Ibn Qutaybah wrote that "Ham, son of Noah, was light-skinned and handsome. Then God Most High changed his complexion and that of his progeny [into black] because of the curse [invoked by] his father." Elsewhere, he states, "They are ugly and misshapen, because they live in a hot country. The heat overcooks them in the womb, and curls their hair."

...
The African jurist Ahmed Baba, for example, defends the chattel slavery by stating, "The Sudanese non-believers are like other non-believers whether they are Christians, Jews, Persians, Berbers, or any others who stick to non-belief and do not embrace Islam... there is no difference between all the non-believers in this respect. Whoever is captured in the condition of non-belief, it is legal to enslave him, whoever he might be, but not he who has converted to Islam voluntarily, from the beginning."
...

Nasir al-Din Tusi (d.1274 CE), a famous Iranian philosopher, wrote: "If various kinds of men are taken and one placed after another, like the Negro from Zanzibar, in the South-most countries, the Negro does not differ from the animal in anything except the fact that his hands have been lifted from the earth, except for what God wishes. Many have seen that the ape is more capable of being trained than the Negro, and more intelligent."
...

Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406CE) added that blacks are "only humans who are closer to dumb animals than to rational beings." The reason for their characteristic "levity, excitability, and great emotionalism," according to Ibn Khaldun, is "due to the expansion and diffusion of the animal spirit" in them. Ibn Khaldun disagrees with the mythological curse of Ham and attributes their "deficiencies" to the climate of Africa and their being "overcooked in the womb."

Other renowned Muslim thinkers, such as Sa'id al-Andalusi (d. 1070CE) wrote that blacks are "More like animals than men," and that "the rule of virtue and stability in judgment" is lacking amongst them, such noble qualities being replaced by "foolishness and ignorance." Even such luminaries as Ibn Sina considered blacks to be "people who are by their very nature slaves."
...
...

No one knows how many Africans were sold into slavery throughout the Middle East, but it is fair to put it at a level higher than that of the Americas because of the length of time during which it was practiced. Islam is certainly tainted with over a millennium of illegal slave trade. Illegal because it was made "legal" only by the redefining of slavery as it existed and was tolerated during the life of the Prophet, and because the doctrine which serviced the ideology of slavery in Muslim thought is a blasphemy before God, who defines Himself as the Just.

One of the most tragic facts is that Mecca, the geographic heart of the Muslim community, was one of the largest slave markets in the Muslim world all the way up until the Twentieth Century when the standards of the international community, championed by the West, came to inform Muslims that chattel slavery is a violation against dignity, humanity and their own standing in global affairs. We find in historical sources that slaves were being captured in East Africa and being taken to Mecca for sale during the pilgrimage. From there they were distributed all over the world. It was a custom for pilgrims to buy, sell and trade slaves while fulfilling their fifth pillar and this went on to the extent that the term "slave market" and the name of the city of Mecca became synonymous. Many unsuspecting free people were taken on the pilgrimage by high-ranking Muslims and sold or arrested on trumped up charges, ultimately ending up as victims of the notorious Meccan slave trade. In fact, slaves have been reported as being sold as late as 1960 in Saudi Arabia, and many more cases are reported in Sudan.

From the Quran:
=================

Sura 70:
-------
070.029
YUSUFALI: And those who guard their chastity,
PICKTHAL: And those who preserve their chastity
SHAKIR: And those who guard their private parts,

070.030
YUSUFALI: Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,

PICKTHAL: Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy;

SHAKIR: Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed

----------------------------
Sura 23:

023.005
YUSUFALI: Who abstain from sex,
PICKTHAL: And who guard their modesty -
SHAKIR: And who guard their private parts,

023.006
YUSUFALI: Except with those joined to them in the marriage bond, or (the captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (in their case) they are free from blame,

PICKTHAL: Save from their wives or the (slaves) that their right hands possess, for then they are not blameworthy,

SHAKIR: Except before their mates or those whom their right hands possess, for they surely are not blameable,

------------------------------------------

Sura 33
--------

033.050
YUSUFALI: O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowers; and those whom thy right hand possesses out of the prisoners of war whom Allah has assigned to thee; and daughters of thy paternal uncles and aunts, and daughters of thy maternal uncles and aunts, who migrated (from Makka) with thee; and any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her;- this only for thee, and not for the Believers (at large); We know what We have appointed for them as to their wives and the captives whom their right hands possess;- in order that there should be no difficulty for thee. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

PICKTHAL: O Prophet! Lo! We have made lawful unto thee thy wives unto whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesseth of those whom Allah hath given thee as spoils of war, and the daughters of thine uncle on the father's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the father's side, and the daughters of thine uncle on the mother's side and the daughters of thine aunts on the mother's side who emigrated with thee, and a believing woman if she give herself unto the Prophet and the Prophet desire to ask her in marriage - a privilege for thee only, not for the (rest of) believers - We are Aware of that which We enjoined upon them concerning their wives and those whom their right hands possess - that thou mayst be free from blame, for Allah is ever Forgiving, Merciful.

SHAKIR: O Prophet! surely We have made lawful to you your wives whom you have given their dowries, and those whom your right hand possesses out of those whom Allah has given to you as prisoners of war, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and the daughters of your paternal aunts, and the daughters of your maternal uncles and the daughters of your maternal aunts who fled with you; and a believing woman if she gave herself to the Prophet , if the Prophet desired to marry her-- specially for you, not for the (rest of) believers; We know what We have ordained for them concerning their wives andthose whom their right hands possess in order that no blame may attach to you; and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

...Need I go on on proving from the Quran that "what your right hand posses" is the slave, and that you'r allowed to have sex with them??

Now for the Hadiths:
======================

SAHIH BUKHARI - VOLUME 3, #432:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri that while he was sitting with Allah's messenger we said, "Oh Allah's messenger, we got female captives as our booty,[b] and we are interested in their prices, [b]what is your opinion about coitus interruptus?" The prophet said, "Do you really do that? It is better for you not to do it. No soul that which Allah has destined to exist, but will surely come into existence."

comment: Further clear-cut proof that its ok for muslims to have sex with the slaves, as they are asking about ok to Do coitus interruptus (pulling before orgasming)...and muhammad's only objection was not that they are having sex with them, but that they shouldnt "pull" because they are preventing a soul that may be created from beeing.

Same Hadith mentioned here again:

--------------

SAHIH BUKHARI - VOLUME 9, #506:

Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri that during the battle with Bani Al-Mustaliq they (Muslims) captured some females and intended to have sexual relations with them without impregnating them. So they asked the prophet about coitus interruptus. The prophet said, "It is better that you should not do it, for Allah has written whom He is going to create till the Day of Resurrection".
Qaza'a said, "I heard Abu Said saying that the prophet said, "No soul is ordained to be created but Allah will create it.""

again: Mu's only objection was not that they are having sex with thier slaves, but because they were doing coitus interruptus.

--------------------------------------------------------

SAHIH MUSLIM, VOLUME 2, #3371

Abu Sirma said to Abu Said al Khudri: "O Abu Said, did you hear Allah's messenger mentioning about al-azl (coitus interrupts)?" He said, "Yes", and added: "We went out with Allah's messenger on the expedition to the Mustaliq and took captive some excellent Arab women; and we desired them for we were suffering from the absence of our wives, (but at the same time) we also desired ransom for them. So we decided to have sexual intercourse with them but by observing azl" (withdrawing the male sexual organ before emission of semen to avoid conception). But we said: "We are doing an act whereas Allah's messenger is amongst us; why not ask him?" So we asked Allah's messenger and he said: "It does not matter if you do not do it, for every soul that is to be born up to the Day of Resurrection will be born".

-----------------------------------------

FROM SAHIH MUSLIM, VOLUME 2, #3432

Abu Said al-Khudri reported that at the Battle of Hunain Allah's messenger sent an army to Autas and encountered the enemy and fought with them. Having overcome them and taken them captives, the Companions of Allah's messenger seemed to refrain from having intercourse with captive women because they were married to Mushrikeen (polytheists). Then Allah, Most High, sent down regarding that: [b]"And women already married, except those whom your right hands possess (Quran - 4:24), (i.e. they were lawful for them when their Idda (menstrual) period came to and end).

need any comment ?

Now for the Seera:
====================

From Tareekh al Tabari (Tabari's History), volume 39, page 194

"He (Muhammad) used to visit her (Mariyam) there and ordered her to veil herself, [but] he had intercourse with her by virtue of her being his property."

From Al tabaqat Al kubra (the Big layers) of Suyuti ,page 151:

"He (the Egyptian Governor) presented to the prophet Mariyah, her sister Sirin, a donkey and a mule which was white....The apostle of Allah liked Mariyah who was of white complexion and curly hair and pretty....The he cohabited with Mariyah as a handmaid and sent her to his property which he had acquired from Banu al-Nadir."

------------------------------------------------------

From Book Encyclopedia of Islam, page 24 under the word 'abd' :

"Abd is the ordinary word for 'slave' in Arabic of all periods, more particularly for "male slave", "female slave" being ama. On the other hand, the Quran frequently uses the term "rakaba", literally "neck, nape of the neck", and still more frequently, the periphrasis "ma malakat aymanukum - "that which your (their) right hand possesses".

Running home, Adam found his two older brothers lying dead in the dirt outside the family's straw shelter. Inside were the bodies of his mother and father, who had been shot in the neck and the stomach. "They killed my whole family," Adam remembers, shaking as he speaks. "Lots of girls were captured. I lost control and started screaming and crying. And then the Janjaweed snatched me and took me away on horseback. They made me their slave."

Concerning having slave women, we would like to let you know that it happens to be a practice necessitated by the condition in which early Muslims found themselves vis-a-vis non-Muslims, as both parties engaged in wars. Slave women or milk al-yameen are referred to in the Qur'an as “Those whom your right hand possess” or “ma malakat aymanukum”; they are those taken as captives during conquests and subsequently became slaves, or those who were descendants of slaves.

Slavery & Sexual relationships with Female Prisoners

Widespread rape, harassment still haunt Sudan's Darfur region: UN

Rape of women and girls and official harassment are still widespread in Sudan's western Darfur region, a senior United Nations official said, insisting that the government in Khartoum was not doing enough to protect displaced people. McNamara said "sexual violence and rape against women and girls" were common, adding: "We have an example of a girl as young as seven credibly reported as a rape victim. Most rapes are multiple rapes and done by many men, usually militia," he added. "Attacks, including particularly sexual violence and rape, are undertaken with impunity," he said, explaining that no exact figures are available. "There is no functioning independent national justice in Darfur at present and that means perpetators of sexual violence are not prosecuted by the courts. There is no deterrent," he added.

Islaam Q&A

Question :

At the present time, is it Halal to have a sexual intercourse with your Loundi (a female prisoner of war) without getting married to her?.

Answer :

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible for a man to have intercourse with anyone except his wife or his female slave (concubine). A wife becomes permissible after shar’i marriage and a concubine becomes permissible to the man who owns her. She may originally be a prisoner of war, and a Muslim may obtain a concubine from the ruler or commander if he took part in fighting in jihad, or if he buys her from her owner. She becomes permissible for him by virtue of his ownership after it is established that she is not pregnant by waiting for one menstrual cycle, or until she has given birth if she is pregnant.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts, from illegal sexual acts)

6. Except from their wives or (the slaves) that their right hands possess, ـــ for then, they are free from blame”

[al-Mu’minoon 23:5-6]

It was narrated that Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, concerning the prisoners of Awtaas: “Do not have intercourse with a pregnant woman until she gives birth, or with one who is not pregnant until she has menstruated once.” Narrated by Abu Dawood, 2157. This hadeeth was classed as saheeh by Shaykh al-Albaani in Irwa’ al-Ghaleel, 187.

In the answer to question no. 10382 we have stated that Islam permits a man to have intercourse with his slave woman whether he has one or more wives or he is not married.

In the answers to questions no. 5707 and 12562 it states that female prisoners of war may be distributed by the commander in jihad, because he has the choice of either distributing them, or ransoming them or setting them free.

I would like to ask one simple question to any one who believes that Islamic conquest created more slaves and was lot more brutal than practiced by western countries for about 200 years or more.

In the whole Arabian Peninsula and other Arab countries what is the total population of people of African origin? In US slave descendants now constitute about 10% of U.S. population. In Saudia Arabia many princes have distinct african look. That proves that they were well treated and integrated. Can some one show me any mixed blood or of African origin man occupied highest post like governor, President, V.P. 50 years ago?

This question was posed by well known Kenyan Muslim author and journalist. I think its a valid question still.

Slavery was there in the ME before Islam and it continued afterwards. It is difficult to say the slavery which existed before was any worse than in Islam. Slavery before and after Islam was not based on race though white skinned slaves were absorbed faster. Muslims countries resisted the abolition of the black slavery the longest justifying that man could not abolish something which was permitted by Allah. Slavery in Mecca and Median was abolished only in the 1960's.

Now regarding black slavery. There was always a black native population in the Yemen area. These blacks and the ones from across the Red sea were mixing with the Arabs long before Islam, slavery or not. Islam bought a lot of slaves into all the major areas of ME, especially in Egypt, Mesopotamia and all along the coast of Arabia, and onto North Africa. Though these slaves were brought for hard labour and domestic servitude, with time they got mixed into all levels of ME society. People from ME who have very curly hair and not necessarily other black features have African mix. Bin Ladin has very curly hair wrapped under his turban. Even the late shah of Iran had curly hair. Even with all such mixing there is still a lot of preudice against African looks in ME. Anwar Sadat looked very African but when Americans made a movie about him with an African American playing his role, all Egyptians hated that.

White slaves on the other hand were better treated. White slave women mixed with the slave owners from the beginning and many fair skinned people of ME can be traced to such origins. White slave men also had better time as most became soldiers and mixed with the population.

The institutional racism against the African population (slaves or non slaves) was always very less in ME compared to what happened in the Americas. An African slave got absorbed into the ME society easier.

Ciao Crazy Canuck,

It was different... Jut as racism is different in Brazil compared to old Jim Crow South.

Cromagnon's link, above, - actually written by a progressive Muslim, and the Bernard Lewis link I provided (a long read) will give you a pretty good and balanced feel for what slavery was (and even is).

Mo' dedicated a lot of time to regulating slavery. I believe that he probably lightened it to a certain extent - though as you will read, the actual outcome was pretty awful - cruel and racist - just the same.

The apologists say that Islam limited slavery only to one source (rightful defensive warfare), and then provided numerous ways for slaves to be set free and that Mo's insistence on "good humane treatment for them," (sic) suggest that slavery was not approved of and the direction was moving towards abolition.

They present Mo as an abolitionist, both living in and out of his times. He had to "tolerate" slavery in his times, but worked things out that it would eventually fade away.

Naturally that has a ring of reasonableness to it.

For example I dream of a world without borders, but I know that if we were to abolish them all at once, there'd be instant hell... so as a would-be prophet I would set things in motion to gradually make them disappear.

I don't worship logic, but if the Messenger didn't approve, if it was his intention to get rid of the evil institution, then why did he have slaves?

Naturally, I a smoker, would be none too happy to see my daughter start smoking and I would tell her not to smoke. But I would assume there are moments when practicing what you preach IS important. Put it this way: I would imagine and expect the President of the Anti-Tobacco Foundation to be a non-smoker, as well as all his close associates. I would imagine a Prophet set on eliminating slavery eschewing the practice and demanding the same from his companions.

I also still wonder why pork gets a clear "Do not eat!" injunction, as clear and broad as a NO-SMOKING SIGN in a Starbuck's cafe, whereas slavery gets treated "sociologically," with dubious inferences necessary through scholarly review and interpretation.

Funny isn't it how pork eating nations such as Italy, Japan, Sweden all have much longer average life spans than all countries where such indulgence is considered horrendously Haram! So where's the old health problem now?

(But you never, know, pork might become extremely unhealthy again, like the British cows of yesterday and the flu-chickens of Hong Kong.)

Don't eat pork gets the direct treatment, don't take slaves does not. The door will be closed on prosciutto and sweet and sour for all time (despite Italian and Chinese Restaurants invading the world), but for slave taking...

What really happened was that by lightening the yoke, Mo nailed down the fetter... He actually prolonged slavery... and now Muslims, who believe the Koran is the word of God are stuck with all those terrible rules and regulations governing one of the worst things man can do to man.

As an Islamophobe it is a sheer albeit cruel delight to watch them go through the mental calisthenics required to defend the "eternal wisdom" of some of those rules: e.g. "A slave for a slave".

(I a believer kill your slave Bob, you, by way of rightful redress can kill my slave Jack... when poor Jack, the sweetest guy in the world was leagues away minding his business watering the rose bushes.)

They're stuck with it... they know it's pure moral filth... but it's the unchangeable word of God... so in order to defend it, they have to put on at least 5 barrister wigs and 7 court robes.

Anyway, yes, Islamic slaves even rose to positions of prestige... but so did Greek slaves...

Slavery in the Americas was generally crueller (though there was no widespread practice of making Eunuchs. CHOP!)... There were the trans-Atlantic voyages aboard the slavers and there were whole continents to colonize.

Ultimately - I mean in modern times - the real difference is one of conscience and awareness. WE (white Europeans) know of our stupidity. cruelty, we feel the pain, we are made poignantly aware of the past... and we are also becoming attentive to the present-day forms of slavery (sex-traders, organ donors, sweatshops)... The Islamic world mostly ignores their horrendous injustices, feels no guilt or shame and even denies extant Sudanese slavery. AND AND AND... they're stuck with it, in their WORD OF GOD book so...

well, here's a genuine Muslim debater:

...who knows what the future may bring. Say if ignorant people restore slavery again big time, say if it becomes once again a world wide practice? You don't know, it may happen, then Islam still has the mechanism in which to justly and humanely deal with it and in time abolish it.

(Thank goodness! I will at once e-mail the Papua new Guinea Tribals to see if they have anything similar in their books to make sure that there are at least a few decent guidelines to guarantee a humaneform of cannibalism and human sacrifice... just in case! )

Ciao!

"Slavery is a part of Islam," says a leading Saudi government cleric. "Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam." And he is the author of textbooks that are used to teach Muslim students...

Foreigners Face Slavery-Like Life in Saudi : Report

http://hrw.org/english/docs/2004/07/15/saudia9061.htm

Human Rights Watch documented how foreigners detained in Saudi Arabia have been denied consular visits and forced to sign confessions that they could not read. The report includes cases of beheading in which the embassies and families of the condemned men were not informed of the executions until after they were carried out. "We found men and women in conditions resembling slavery," said Whitson. "Case after case demonstrates that the Saudis are turning a blind eye to systematic abuses against foreign workers." In one case, some 300 women from India, Sri Lanka and the Philippines worked 12-hour shifts, six days a week, cleaning hospitals in Jeddah. At the end of each work day, they were returned to crowded, dormitory-style housing, with 14 women sharing one small room lined with bunk beds. The doors to the rooms were locked from the outside, denying the women any freedom of movement for the two or three years of their contracts. The report includes four cases of women who were victims of forced confinement and sexual abuse, including rape. In all four cases, the perpetrators, three of whom were alleged rapists, did not face criminal investigation or prosecution. The report also has information about women whom Human Rights Watch found in a prison in Riyadh who were serving sentences for "illegal pregnancies."

Africa: Slavery lives on

Everyone knows it exists, but nobody talks about it.
Except journalist Souleymane Cisse, who spends his time and energy in the struggle against slavery in his home country, Niger.

In this complicated society, where social relationships date back to antiquity and some nomadic Tuareg groups still look down upon black Africans in the south, slavery is still practiced on several levels.

Before and even long after the colonial area, no legislation existed that prohibited slavery.

"The colonial rulers preferred to ignore it because they wanted to co-operate with the aristocracy who kept these slaves," Cisse explains....

Last year, the Niger government eventually passed a law banning slavery outright. Under this law, a slavery conviction caries a ten-year prison term or a 1m CFA franc (about R10 000) fine.

But tremendous poverty, illiteracy and desperate circumstances in which many people live make it virtually impossible to eradicate slavery.

Cisse refers to three categories of slaves:

Those who live with their masters, do heavy work, are often abused and receive no wage.

In one case he encountered, a woman was only five years old when the family of her owner's wife gave her away as wedding gift.

In another case, a slave was castrated because his owner's son wanted the slave's wife.

"These people are exposed to terrible suffering," Cisse says.

Secondly, young girls are still sold in Niger as dowry.

Under Muslim tradition, a man may have four wives, but he may take a fifth wife if she is a slave.

Cisse says there is a "slavery triangle" that stretches from the southern town of Maradi in Niger to Kano in Nigeria. Girls from poor family in Niger are sent away to become the wives of rich sultans in the northern states of Nigeria where shariah laws prevail.

"The girls are sold on markets for between R4 000 and R5 000."

The last category is former slaves who have won their freedom but are still seen as slaves by the community. Cisse works with the organisation Timidria ("brotherhood") that was formed in 1991 to fight slavery....

Because the issue is still largely taboo in Niger, it remains very difficult to change the situation, Cisse says.
