There is nothing wrong with eating pork. It is a Jewish religious edict which was borrowed by Muhammed.
But for health reason it is wise to reduce consumption of red meat.

It took me years to eat meat on Fridays. Do you know when I started? When I actually read the Bible and found out that it wasn't in there. Not anywhere. Nor was fasting during Lent. Nor was going to church on Sundays. Nor was sacrificing during Advent. Nor was fasting before takng the Eucharist. Nor was giving confession to a priest. None of it. Not one word of it was in the Bible.

Do you know what Jesus did talk about in the Bible? Being nice to other people. Feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, refusing to meet violence with violence, refraining from harsh judgment against others. Jesus never said a word about homosexuality (albeit others in the Bible did) or sexual misbehavior in general. He was never drawn into one of those conversations ever once. I started to think Jesus was really a zen master!

Bottom line, the problem with religious certitude is that it discourages enlightenment of any kind: spiritual, scientific, moral,societal...any kind whatsoever. Spirituality is great if it's your thing, but if it isn't hey, you never hear of marauding bands of fundamentalist atheists running around trying to decapitate people!!!

I think that this thread and Diane`s insight into the mindset of muslims that she has given us is probably one of the most important that we have had on the Forum. It is all very well we Kafirs having "good ideas" about muslim mentality but there is no substitute for genuine inside information. In order for us "to engage the enemy we need to understand the enemy".

Once again, Diane, much appreciation for your input. Diane only confirmed what I and others have always suspected - namely Islam has only two pillars - Brainwashing and Fear.

wow Diane, your story is quite an interesting one. And you have spoken well....very well. Islam does put a sense of fear...deep fear in you. When I was first met a muslim, they told me all sorts of things that scared me to hell! I was so scared to the point I would hide whenever I saw my muslim friends becuase they would be asking and tellling me all sorts of things.
But you knwo, when you are really alone, and you sit and think....why does this hadith or this surah of the quran portray such terror in me?...think about it. Ask yourslef why should it be in that book in the first place. I continued to ask these questions and with each question, I got an answer.

For example, I would ask why do muslims have to make the abolitions(something like that...when they have to wash their face, feet hands etc 3 times) when they have to pray?....I used to ask myself, "don't they get tired of doing that five times a day?" I got a very substantial answer.
I also used to ask "why do the quran considers a man/woman with urine/sperms etc on themselves not to enter the mosque" They must bath and clean it off. So I would say, suppose Iam from the toilet, and accidently the urine did drop on me, why is it recomended that I have to go and change....and why is water the best cleansing agent as compared to Tissues used in most western worlds. Believe me, I not only asked these questions but a vast of them. I am still doing that. Most of the answers are very interesting and makes you more conscience of yourself. For example, Iam not a muslim but when I understood why muslims prefer water to tissues, it made me shift from using tissues to water......
Yes, islam does put fear in you when you don't understadn the concept behind it. Someone would say "why bother cleaning myself, I will take a shower in the evening"....believe me, when you are so used to doing it, it just comes automatically and quite naturally to the extent that the day you don't do it, you feel so uncomfortable.

Diane was a tru muslim and she would know bette rthan me...no doubt. But Ialso think our belifs are different and what we get from reading the same book can be different. For example in a classroom, we all read the same subjects but we don't get the same grades. This is the same with religion. We can all read the same book but what we grasp from it is slightly different.
However I cannot say that by leaving islam you did the rightthing. Nor can I say by staying is sthe right thing as I am not God himself who would know better. Thanks for sharing your story Diane, makes us know what some of the muslims go through deep down there.

The washing is called "ablution" (in English). Actually, washing with water after using the toilet is quite common in Europe. It's not exclusive to muslims. In fact, Mohammad used to prescribe that muslims use three stones to wipe themselves. Also, when water wasn't available, he recommended ablution using dirt. Does this sound like good hygiene? It's actually very silly.

I believe Diane absolutely did the right thing by leaving Islam. No God should want you to fear him. Would you want your children to fear you?

My daughter does not fear me because she knows I would never hit her. Yet she is very well behaved because she wants to please me, and she wants me to be proud of her.
