Racist Politics against Chinese in Indonesia


The anti Chinese racist policies are made by Indonesian government and Indonesian military. The Indonesian government/military created anti Chinese prejudices among Indonesian people for political purposes.

In Indonesia, the government is closely connected with the military party because so many military officers become high ranking government officials and have powers in government. Unlike in the USA where the military doesn’t get involved in government, in Indonesia the military actively gets involved in government and decides many political decisions.

The number of Chinese in Indonesia is around 9 million people or less than 5 % of 220 million Indonesians. Chinese people are hard workers, very flexible and can easily get along with other different ethnicities. Under President Suharto’ rule from 1966 to 1998 (32 years), The Indonesian government gave most bank loans to Chinese descents for political purpose.

The political reason why Indonesian government gives most bank loans to minority Chinese is because President Soeharto wants to make Chinese descents as “cash cows”. Besides, if Indonesian government gave bank loans fairly to Chinese and Indonesians, the majority of the middle class would become Islamic Indonesians and some Chinese. Then, Islamic Indonesians could become rich and have the power to topple the government. So, President Soeharto gave most bank loans to Chinese and just a few to Indonesians.

However, what would happen if the middle-class, which includes approximately 50,000 Chinese business people wanted to topple the government? IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE !!!!. The Indonesian government has always made strong anti Chinese prejudices among Indonesians and use these prejudices to provoke anti-Chinese riots if Chinese descents try to topple the government. Besides, the anti-Chinese prejudices are used to separate Chinese from Indonesians; because of this, Chinese can not peacefully live with other Indonesians. As a result, Chinese can not join with Indonesians to topple the Government. The Chinese and Indonesians are not united.

In addition, most Indonesians are Islamic and most Chinese are Christian. To make anti-Chinese prejudices grow among Indonesians, the government/ military treat Chinese as non Indonesian citizens and use every chance to make Chinese look bad in the eye of Indonesians. The Indonesian government doesn’t allow Chinese to become government officials and military members. The government is worried that if Chinese become government officers or military members, they can use their powers and positions to eliminate the racial politics applied by the Indonesian government.

In addition, Chinese are rarely allowed to enter public universities. Universities are places in which many young intellectuals study and discuss many things. If many Chinese enter public universities, they can talk and discuss the very strong racial discriminations against Chinese. If this happened, the racial politics of the Indonesian government will be less successful. If Chinese are prohibited from entering public universities, Indonesian students cannot get involved and discuss many topics with Chinese students. Thus, the Indonesians do not know much about Chinese, and because of this, the racist politics can work.

The government makes continuous racist opinions/comments via all newspapers and all television channels controlled by the government + via millions of government officials. The government deliberately discriminates against Chinese to show Indonesians that the government considers Chinese descents to be non Indonesian citizens. As a result, Indonesians think that if the government itself racially discriminates against Chinese via many regulations and opinions in public, it is OK for Indonesian people to mistreat Chinese. Psychologically, Indonesians have been taught by the government itself that “ it is okay to mistreat Chinese descents “

Islamic groups know that it is the government policy to give most bank loans to Chinese. It is not the fault of the Chinese. Indonesian government only gives a small amount of bank loans to those Islamic groups. The Islamic groups did not dare to challenge the government because the Indonesian army will suppress them. So, Islamic people aim their angers, hatreds and envious to weak Chinese descents. This is what the Indonesian government wants. The government wants Indonesians hate Chinese so much but the government will control the hatred and the situation so there will not be anti-Chinese riots everyday. The government just allows the hatred and racist prejudices among Indonesians to Chinese to grow in daily basis, then when the government or military has a serious problem, such as corruptions, scandals and bad economic situations which make government/military look bad in the view of people, the government/military will provoke anti-Chinese riots everywhere to divert people’s attention from the government’s problems to anti Chinese riots. It has happened so many times for decades. Many Indonesians know this kind of racist politics, but because they cannot get bank loans from government and have less business knowledge to compete with Chinese in business, they use the racial riots by mobilizing their people to burn and destroy Chinese businesses to win the business competitions.

Anti Chinese riots in May 1998 and many other anti Chinese riots are the examples of anti Chinese policies by Indonesian government/military. There have been many investigations by International, local news agencies and by human rights groups that Indonesian military was involved in the anti Chinese riots in May 1998. The Indonesian government/military made Chinese descents as scapegoats of bad economic problem. Indonesian government/military divert the anger of people from Indonesian government to Chinese descents.

Indonesian government/military make Chinese descents as “cash cows”. Indonesian government/military make Chinese descents build economy of Indonesia. Indonesian government/military regularly blackmail Chinese descents a lot of money for “protection fees” from majority Indonesian people. If Chinese descents refuse to pay the blackmails, Indonesian government/military will easily provoke Indonesian people to racially attack Chinese descents. If government/military had problems with people, government/military will make Chinese descents as scapegoats to divert the attention of people from government/military’s mistakes to anti Chinese riots.

The current situation now is: After President Suharto was toppled by people in 1998, there have been many new presidents until today. Those new presidents gave enormous bank loans to Indonesians. However, Indonesians have failed to use the bank loans to build businesses. Many government banks bankrupt because Indonesians fail to return the loans. It is because Indonesians have not been well trained in real business environments. It is just Chinese descents who have good business skills. For decades, Chinese descents have not been allowed to work outside business environment. Chinese have not been allowed to become government officials, military members and so on. The Indonesian government/military do this kind of racist discrimination to separate Chinese descents from Indonesian people. As a result, Chinese descents are very specialized in business environment.

Nowadays, the situation is like under the rule of President Suharto before 1998. The current president is ex-military general: President Susilo Bambang Yudoyono. He is supported by Indonesian military. Under his rule, Indonesian government still racially discriminate Chinese descents. Indonesian government/military is making Chinese descents as “cash cows” again. They support Chinese descents in doing businesses, to build economy of Indonesia. But, Indonesian government/military still don’t recognize Chinese descents as part of Indonesia. Indonesian government/military don’t even try to eliminate racial prejudices against Chinese among Indonesian people. Racial prejudices against Chinese are still very strong among Indonesians. Indonesian government/military still apply 60 racial policies against Chinese descents. As s result, anti Chinese riots will happen again, anytime and anywhere. It is just about a matter of time.

Chinese are discriminated against in Malaysia also. RThey would change their attitude if thiere was a mass exodus...the economies would collapse.

However there have been some changes in Indoneisa, at tleast now the chinese can practice thier festivals and their indigenous relgion/philosophy...Confuciansim is officially recognised, why Dao/Tao isnt dont know.

This doesnt mean things are hunk dory ofcourse.

Countless complaints are heard in Malaysia where the Chinese are denied entry to the public universities despite acheiving among the highest academic scores in the country every year. Instead the seats are given to the low-acheiving Malays. In fact the percentage of Malays are as ridiculously high as near 85% as opposed to the agreed 55%. And the goverment passed it off by saying stuff such as 'meritocracy' and 'Malays got smarter than Chinese'.
Apparently it is not okay for Chinese to outnumber the Malay in education according to the Malaysia goverment because the socio-economic balance of the country would be ruined by the existence of economic identity of races as a result of unequal education.
More emphasis are given to Malays because their living standards were lower. But in the other hand, it is VERY OKAY for Malays to grab all the education opportunities for themselves and leave only the 'leftover' for the Chinese, even the very poor and needy ones, as if THAT won't hurt the so-called socio-economic balance in the first place!
Note carefully that I stated MALAY not BUMIPUTRA. The other bumi students such as the Ibanese, Dusun, Kadazanese and other indigeneous groups in Sabah and Sarawak are far far far far far fewer in number compared to Malays. Even far worse are the Bumiputra proper of Malaysia, the Orang Asli's fate.
Anyway I am sorry to hear of mistreatment of Chinese in Indonesia, Bangsa Tionghua.

It's true. Malays and 'Malay' Indonesians (> Muslim Indonesians) hate the Chinese. They are jealous of their success despite fierce discrimination. They bar them from policitics, the army etc. They aren't sometimes called 'the Jews of Asia' for nothing. I guess when Muslims cannot find I real Jew they invent one to hate and detest.

You'd be amazed at the filthy crap 'pious' Muslims say to my relatives. You'd be amazed by how to try to pick fights with the Chinese, how the Chinese get blamed for everything: from the bad economy to the unrest in several provinces (unrest that is usually the work of Jahadis and / or the army). It's sickening. Truly sickening.

I hope mainland China strikes hard, very hard, extremely hard when we have another 1965.
