I was able to find
Sirat Rasul Allah by Ibn Ishaq by purchasing:
The Life of Muhammad: A Translation of Ibn Ishaq's Sirat Rasul Allah
by I. Ishaq, A. Guillaume
I paid $35. I also bought everthing on my wishlist above.
I have no idea what I am in for. Or what good it will do me. |

The History of al-Tabari by Abu Muhammad bin al-Tabari
also called called the Ta’rikh
It is a 39-vol. set.
ISBN:?
Author: al-Tabari/various translators
Publisher: State University of New York Press
Pages: 4700 Binding: Paperback |
The best price I could find was $800 from here.
Does anyone know of a cheaper price?
I picked up:
Understanding the Hadith: The Sacred Traditions of Islam - Ram Swarup
Crossroads to Islam: The Origins of the Arab Religion and the Arab State (Islamic Studies (Amherst, N.Y.).) - Yehuda D. Nevo
.

This came in the mail today:
What the Koran Really Says: Language, Text, and Commentary by Ibn Warraq
I'm a little disappointed in it. I wasn't what I wanted. I wanted a verse-by-verse exposition
on the Qur'an. What I got was a monster. It's still good reading. In my opinion by browsing
through it for 45 minutes, the title should be "How and Why the Qur'an says what it says."
It spends way too much time with Qur'anic Paleography and Textual Criticism.
Don't misunderstand me I know the Bible like any good amateur would. I know what a
Commentary is. And a Strong's ConCordance. Maybe you even heard of a Thompson Chain
Reference Bible. So I have a good head start from the totally uninitiated. But you just can't
crack open a koran and started reading with this book by your side. It's not a good first read.

I was looking around on Dar-us-Salam Publications and there I discovered what seems to me to be primary sources.
Namely the following:
- Sunnan Abu-Dawud (3 Vol. Set)
- Riyad-us-Saliheen (2 Vol. Set)
- Muwatta Imam Malik
- Mishkat al-Masabih (2 Vol. Set)
- Bulugh Al-Maram
- Al-Lulu Wal Marjan (2 Vol. Set)
- Commentary on the Forty Hadith of Al-Nawawi (3 Vol. Set)
- History of Islam (3 Vol. Set) ISBN: 1591440343
Does anyone know what they are? And why they feel they should belong in my library? |

My copy of Tafsir Ibn Kathir arrived in the mail. It was an evaluation copy of
the 30-vol. set by Dar-us-Salam Publications. It is incredible. The typesetting
is easy to read. And also it is not too scholarly and not too watered down
either. Liberal use of arabic etymology is in this book. It has the arabic in the
margin.
My copy was published in Aug. of '97. It is part 30 of the multi-volume set(The
last one), covering suras 78-114. Translated by Habib Badr. The set they are
selling now appears to have been translated by someone else.
The set sells for $130 on amazon. |

I have since found answers to my questions in the previous post. |

I know it's been mentioned before but Why I am not a muslim is a great book.
I expected something quite weak since the title (IMO) is a little tacky, but it's actually a very impressive with book. Highly recommmended.

Does anyone know of a book that gives proper context of the koran? I bought the book What the Koran Really Says: Language, Text, and Commentary by Ibn Warraq, but had similar feeling to lonely_soul, that is; it wasn't really what I was looking for.
Thanks in advance.

I never would have bought that book until I saw it at the bookstore. Very massive. With lots of info.

I've been looking and looking for decent commentaries on the Koran. I don't think there are any, readily available at a reasonable price. There just isn't a demand for them. Muslims read their Koran. They don't study it. In my bible study days I used Barnes Notes on the New Testament. I don't see anything like that for the Koran.
You could try to look for Richard Bell's commentary. I couldn't find it. Sayyid Qutb has one. I could live with Ibn Kathir (translated by Habib Badr) but that translation is not available anymore. |

| It looks like Goldziher's book is only used now. I saw the 1st ed. of the Enlish at my uni. library. I photocopied 2 chapters as they are important to my research. I also have both of Wansbrough's books and his little Einstein lecture. The new Prometheus editions have all 3. |
