I actually agree with a fair bit of what Burkert said, but I have a couple of bones to pick with him:
First quote:
France, due to her program of appeasement, and safe haven policy for terrorists got a pass for awhile.
Not true. Read the last chapter of "Why I Am Not a Muslim" by Ibn Warraq, in which he describes the British as appeasing the anti-Rushdie fanataics, while the French routinely deport radical imams. Also recall that the French (wisely, in my opinion) banned the hijab in schools. But Prince Charles mumbles on about how wonderful Islam is.
Second quote:
We have a president today that is not going to allow an Islamic victory.
Hahahahah! What did our glorious "W" just do? He overthrew a secular Iraq and handed it over to the Shiite fundamentalists! Saddam was no angel, but he did kill Moqtada al Sadr's father. Any enemy of the Sadr family can't be all bad.

Mister Neorand,
actually you have no clue of Saddam-Iraq.
Of course, Saddam didn't mention Allah, he takes his power from the "Arabic Nation" This "Arabic Nation" is not a fact but a wish for the future to justify actions of today.
If you know a little bit of Baath-party, you would know why the founder of the Baath-party 'Aflaq (btw, he studied in Paris) called his bible "fi sabil al-Baath". Sounds like the Qoranic "fi sabil allah".
You don't make Saddam secular if he just changes all terms but keeps the same methods.
Maybe you don't know that there were people in Germany who actually prayed to their prophet "Hitler" for relief etc.
And killing Sadr means nothing. As you have noticed, killing is in the arabic-islamic world a normal matter. Sadr wouldn't think about it, too, if Saddam would be the victim. You see, two religion leaders with an absolute claim of faith can't live together. They have to kill each other.
Saddam actually wasn't secular, he fostered religious behaviour and his party had always the characteristics of a sect. And Saddam acted like Mohammed in Medina.
Don't forget what Aflaq said: The Arab's entry in history was accompanied by a religious message (not out of money, land, booty .... ), so the Arab's have a special link to Allah.
