Indonesia: Muslims Burnt Two Churches and Killed 3 Ahmadiyahs
More than 1,500 Muslims gathered and burned two churches in Indonesia. They were protesting a verdict on a blasphemy trial. A Christian was sentenced to 5 years in jail for distributing leaflets that allegedly insulted Islam. The protestors considered the judgment too lenient and demanded death penalty.
The mob gathered at the courthouse and attacked the police with stones. Although, Antonius Bawengan, a 58-year old Christian received the maximum sentence according to the Indonesian law, the protestors asked for Islamic law, which guarantees death penalty. They chanted “Kill”, “Kill”, “Kill” and “Burn”, “Burn”, Burn”.
Indonesian Muslims are considered moderate and the country claims to be a secular country.
The burning of churches happened just two days after another incident of killing 3 people from Ahmadiyah sect.
Ahmadiyahs are Muslim too, but they believe that Mohammed is not the last prophet. Whereas, the main stream Muslims believe no prophet after Mohammed. This simple belief sharply divides the two groups of Muslims.
Indonesian government considers Ahmadiyah sect as a defiant group and have not banned the group. However, the psyche of the citizens is different. Often, killing of an Ahmadiya is considered a holy act. The following video shows how a mob attacked the Ahmadiyahs. Three people were killed.
