Will Obama's Oratorical Skills Help Him Succeed in the Middle East?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friendPDF versionPDF versionDr. Sami Alrabaa Barack Obama is undoubtedly a good orator and a charismatic figure. These two traits have certainly helped him be elected as President of the United States of America. Islamic terrorism and a severe global economic crisis added impetus to his success. Rhetorically talented and charismatic figures usually flourish in crises. But will rhetoric and charisma help Mr. Obama succeed at home and in the Middle East? I doubt it. Unless Obama calls a spade a spade, he will fail. Unless he calls things by their real name with regard to the Middle East, he will fail. Unless he uses the language of Ronald Reagan: "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall" Obama will never succeed, especially as far as Islamic terror is concerned. Instead of highlighting the root causes of Islamic terrorism and lack of democracy in the Middle East, Obama repeats himself ad nausea. He advocates that he and America want to be partners to Muslims. He seeks the dialogue with Muslims. America no longer wants to impose its values on the rest of the world. He also uses aphorisms like, "Democracy brings peace and prosperity to all of us." Had Western leaders - during the Cold War - confined themselves to general rhetoric with regard to communism, the Berlin Wall would have stayed and the Soviet Union would have survived until now. Obama must address the root causes of Islamic terror and lack of freedom and human rights in the Middle East and Islamic societies if he wants to make a difference. He must name things by their real name. He should stop using hollow phrases. Obama must speak loudly and specifically. He should tell his audience in Cairo and elsewhere:
  • King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia: Stop preaching hatred, violence. Stop practicing oppression, and discrimination against women. Introduce democracy and freedom of expression. Close down those mosques and madrassas that preach fanaticism. Stop exporting Wahhabism and fanaticism. Scrap those school books which incite to hatred and violence against non-Muslims. Allow religious freedom, and let Christians, Jews, and followers of other faiths build their own temples and practice their own religion as you are allowed to do in other countries. Introduce democracy and freedom of expression. Stop oppressing women. We are not living in the Middle Ages.
  • Mr. Husni Mubarak, President of Egypt, release all those political prisoners who demand democracy and human rights. Stop prosecuting them. Establish real democracy and free media. Stop confiscating freedom of expression. Stop prosecuting bloggers who criticize your regime. Stop prosecuting religious reformers. Fight for power through democracy and fair play.
  • King Abdullah of Jordan: Stop cementing your police state. Release all those political prisoners. Stop squandering our aid of billions of dollars on your palaces, luxury yachts and motorcycles. Invest the money in development projects and create job for the poor.
  • Hamas leaders: Scrap your charter in which you call for wiping out Israel. This is barbaric, and there is no place for barbaric people on this earth.
  • Arab and Muslim leaders: protect those scholars who call for religious freedom and modern interpretation of Islam. Stop those fanatic chaplains from preaching fanaticism.
That is the kind of specific language and content which Mr. Obama should have used in his speech in Cairo. Had Mr. Obama spoken clearly and straightforwardly in Cairo, he would encourage people to demand political and religious freedom and isolate radical Muslims. Radical Muslims are emboldened because they are tolerated by Arab and Muslim regimes and the West is unspecific and inactive. But Mr. Obama, and for that matter most Western leaders, are hypocritical. While they incessantly demand the release of Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma, they never demand the release of political prisoners in the Arab world. They never criticize "friendly" Arab regimes for lack of democracy and abuse of human rights. Obama avoids being specific in relation to Arab regimes. As a matter of fact, he contradicts himself. While he always repeats that he wants to help Muslim build democratic societies, he defends totalitarian regimes like the Saudi and the Egyptian in interviews with BBC (June 1, 2009) and French media (June 2, 2009). As Justin Webb from BBC asked Obama what he thought of the authoritarian regime of the Egyptian President, Husni Mubarak, Obama objected to the word "authoritarian," and tried "rhetorically" to answer the question. First he said that he did not like to use such "labels," then he defended Mubarak and argued, the man is a "force of stability." In other words, democracy and freedom must be sacrificed for the sake of "stability." Justin Webb also asked president Obama about human rights abuse in Egypt. According to Amnesty International, there are thousands of political prisoners in Egypt. Webb asked if Obama wanted to raise this issue in his speech at Cairo University. "Oh, well, there are thousands of political prisoners around the world." Obama said, and added, "It is not our job to lecture on human rights." Furthermore, "Human rights are universal." Oh, really? How genius! Nobody knew that! It is typically an Obama pattern. When the talk about human rights abuse and absence of democracy in the Arab world is, Obama flees into generalities. On the other hand when the talk about human rights abuse in Burma is, Obama becomes specific and condemns the Junta in that country. I am sure that if Burma were "friendly" to the West, he would not be that specific. Later in the interview with BBC, Obama advocated "Action is required, not words." But obviously this does not apply to the Arab world. He wants "to open a dialogue with Muslims to remove misapprehensions on both sides." Obama added, after 9/11, the level of misapprehension has increased. Oh, 9/11 is simply a "misapprehension!" To add insult to injury, Obama added, "There are cultural differences between us and the Muslim world, and we must understand these differences." Besides, "There are many Muslims who live among us, and that makes us part of the Muslim world." So 9/11 and all the terror launched by Islamic Jihadists is due to "cultural differences," and misunderstanding of these differences. The free world "misunderstands" the Islamic culture of hatred and violence. The question is, Mr. President, who is rejecting whom? Who is inciting to hatred and violence? Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, Bahais? It is Muslims, their Koran and Hadith. In his recent interview with French media, Obama also defended Saudi Arabia, the worst despotic and fanatic regime in modern history. He commended Saudi Arabia for being a loyal strategic ally of pivotal importance for the West. My Saudi friends tell me that the totalitarian regimes in Burma and elsewhere are actually paradise compared to life in Saudi Arabia, which lacks all kinds of basic human rights. Obama's defense of Saudi Arabia is music to the ears of King Abdullah and his clan. They can relax and carry on their totalitarian rule. The most important power in the world approves of that. Bowing to the Saudi King, the way he did in London, and talking about Saudi Arabia like that is suspicious. I suspect that he received millions of dollars, directly or indirectly, during his presidential campaign. The Saudis are very good at that. They bribe influential people to keep them quiet. On the other hand, how come that Obama was so specific as far as Israel in concerned? He urged the Israeli government to stop building settlements in the West Bank, but failed to urge Hamas stop its terrorist attacks and denying the existence of Israel. Note: I wrote this piece before Obama delivered his speech at Cairo University on June 4, 2009. I was sure that he was going to deliver a rhetoric speech that is void and unspecific. Obama may be a good orator but as a politician he will fail, in particular in the Middle East. Dr. Sami Alrabaa, an ex-Muslim, is a professor of Sociology and an Arab-Muslim culture specialist. He has taught at KuwaitUniversity, KingSaudUniversity, and MichiganStateUniversity. He also writes for the Jerusalem Post.

Very nice article. It is essential to bring in democracy in the middle east. For that to happen, Islam must disappear

Quote from this excellent

Quote from this excellent article by Sami Alrabaa:
"Barack Obama is undoubtedly a good orator and a charismatic figure. These two traits have certainly helped him be elected as President of the United States of America."

So was Adolf Hitler. These two traits certainly helped him to be elected as Chancellor of Germany. So was Muhammad and these two traits helped him to become supreme warlord of Arabia and a prophet of hate and intolerence.

Moral of story - beware of good orators and charismatic figures.

oh.. obama said Besides,

oh.. obama said
Besides, “There are many Muslims who live among us, and that makes us part of the Muslim world.”

i dont get it..., america is the birth place of democracy which they try to spread it or shove it into the (barbaric and absolute submission to satan) muslim world, and he want us to become a PART of the very country that america try put democratic into....?%#@.., i don't really like to hear where my asumption going

"President Barack Obama" is

"President Barack Obama" is an anagram of "An Arab-backed Imposter"

How appropriate!

I am not really that gung ho

I am not really that gung ho about Democracy. Democracy gives the right to decide to people who have no idea of what they are doing. Therefore in my vision Democracy is extremely dangerous.

Democratic institutions can be easily manipulated and used to the benifit of any group of people who can make their own alliances, and go ahead with mass voting.

Countries like Saudi Arabia and others in the middle are not yet intellectually evolved enough to have a democratic setup.

Even a Democracy like USA has failed, owing to the fact that its citizens elected a fool to power.

President Obama really thinks

President Obama really thinks talking loud and saying nothing will win the Muslim world. They are laughing at him and he thinks he can win their approval. To fulfill his dreams for Muslims and the world Islam has to disappear.
If he thinks he can cHANGE Islam then he is Allah who is non other than Satan the DEvIL and according to Muhammad Satan is a Black Man, there fore is the wife of the DEVIL. Did Obama really read any of the Quran or ahadiths? This articulate, Harvard graduate man raised by middle class white people from Kansas, with an African-Arab from Kenya has thrown the Muslim wolrd upside down and the rest of us in a defensive mode. THE RACE WAR HAS BEGUN. ISLAM, A religious-political idea from the 7th century will have to be destroyed for Marxism to survive as most leave Islam and become atheist. Marxism and communism both lost in WW2.

"--Countries like Saudi Arabia and others in the middle are not yet intellectually evolved enough to have a democratic setup.--"

And you should have added few more countries of the Indian sub-Continent as those countries fall in the same category. Which includes India also. Yes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal , Srilanka and many other ex-British colonies have not yet " intellectually,Politically and economically" evolved enough to have democratic setup. What they need is something in between: "Semi-dictatorship and semi-democracy ".

Just look at the world history, all economically developed countries of the present day world were never colonized by the Xian British and the European SOBs. The Xian British , American, Australian and Europeans owe their economical prosperity to the countries they looted, plundered and colonized. And their ex-colonies owe them nothing in terms of prosperity of any kind. That's the reason democracy is a failure in the ex-colonies of the Xian SOBs.

Dear ff67,
Hindus had a way out, eons ago, about body odor.Males wore sandal pastes to dispel, and females adorned themselves more than just flowers out of court-yards of their own. There always is fragrance of incense at every home,no matter how humble their earnings are.Come home to a hindu, you will always relish and reminisce delight of sweets at hand, fragrance of sacredness so cliché,warmth of touch as hugs, taste of culinary skills all home, mellifluous music any given time for music has been a way to salvation too,and willingness to harness any long-lasting friendship in faith and trust.
I am only mentioning some innate wills of a hindu, for he/she believes and sees everywhere written VASUDHAIVA KUTUMBHAM(=earth is one family),or SARVEJANAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU(=May all people be happy),and a lot more.
I am sure being a vegan, you can be less smellier.Meat gets you constipated faster and easier and smell worse with less occasions of the pleasures of frequent farts!

freedomfighter67, I see an

freedomfighter67,

I see an old pattern here. He thinks testaments were written in English by white Americans about events (Revelations/Hallucinations) that took place in America thousands of years ago.

He is experiencing weird smells. He will probably get revelations (read Hallucinations) soon. Also miracles like virgin birth will happen. Then all the decomposed bodies will wake up and march to heaven. How modern????

Wake up freedomfighter67. When illiterate Arabic Bedouins were smoking crap about revelations, Hindus were studying maths, astrology and medicine in universities. Hindu seers who wrote scripture in sanskrit did not get revelations out of the blue. They were seeking for it and reached those stages through their own effort and perseverance. They kept no secrets and gave those paths/methods to their disciples. Remember Budha who reached state of enlightenment through Hindu Samkhya doctrine? Hinduism transcends polytheism through self inquiry and realization. Mere faith is blind.

Anybody who says God chose him to be a messenger is a Liar. God would have certainly chosen Gandhi and Martin Luther King if it had chosen lesser mortals. Fortunately these people were truthful and honest.

Having said that I have highest regard for Jesus Christ and his teaching. Jesus is Son of god and so is you and I. Your personal dislike for Hindus is situational and the only way you can find answers is by knowing more about Hinduism.

Great article by dr Alrabaa.

Great article by dr Alrabaa. All those texts Obama should have said to these Islamic leaders were really great. I suppose there are economic and strategic reasons to support the governments of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, that I am ignorant of. But Mubarak and his clique stand so much in the way, as explained by Dr. Alrabaa. Even democratically elected radical Muslims in government are to be preferred over this "ruling elite", because in the light of democracy they will be exposed to their countrymen (learned this from Dr. Pete Rottier) as the ayatollahs and Islam are exposed in Iran even now.

So we followers of divers faiths face a threat by a part (never all) of the Muslims, due to demographics. And a part of the Islamic leaders in Islamic countries, face a threat, of freedom of speech, free elections (at least in the long run), constitutional state, hence control over corrupt governments, autonomy of the individuals, so also of women. Who also should be educated well and being able to chose careers, being financially independent. And who then will get less children. Of course this threathens the power-base of these leaders.

Which of the 2 will win? I feel that if we protect democracy, democracy will protect us. But let us do it wherever we can, however we can, in a global way, provided we do it peaceful at all times. But we do have the money, brains and energy for it! Only goal and will are lacking.

Democratic rules are not meant to be perfect at all. They are meant for continuous improvement, precisely because perfect, immaculate government-systems ARE impossible. (And I DON't believe God is helping us in any way in this respect, by the way.) They are meant to free as many humans as possible, in as many ways as is POSSIBLE. From oppression, tyranny, corruption, false propaganda and ignorance. Democratic rules are never imposed on people, they are only liberating people from the beliefs- and governments-systems that were in place prior to democracy.

They are also based on the principle that to use as many brains as possible is better than to use only the brains of the current "King, High priests" and their advisors. Who in part tend to be sycophants, whereas the most intelligent people in a country are shut up, either by violence or intimidation.

Barack did say one other good thing; "it is much easier to blame others than it is to look inward". Ibn Warraq called the greatest Western, Democratic value/ characteristic its ability of self-criticism, so lacking in the "Muslim World".

Self-criticising our system is rife on this site, in our societies, and that's good. Democracy has many faults, throws up "Obama's" as leaders, but it allows us to criticize and control our fallible leaders, it allows us to admit our inevitable mistakes, learn from them, improve. At least much more than all other beliefs- organising systems do.

Only that is why it is preferable to all other systems in my view. NOT because it is perfect; "I beg your pardon, we never promised you a rosegarden".

I wonder why people don't pay

I wonder why people don't pay heed to dissidents like Sami. Its a shame that an immigrant has to fight for the rights which they attained after coming to the West. The natives don;t seem to be interested in confronting this evil at all.

The Government of U S always

The Government of U S always has a clear objective irrespective of the implementation policies to achieve same. All previous policies of past administrations and other western countries efforts towards democratising the hard core Muslim countries or destroying the Islam religion as a whole seem not to work and I strongly believe the new approach by Obama will have significant impact on Muslims in due course. As Islam like any other religion is a realm of fantasy, Muslims need a guiding hand to see the light not confrontation or alienation. So please let’s give President Obama a chance.

My article titled Is

My article titled Is AlQaeda closing on America through Mexico can also throw light on similar lines.. It is given here:
IS AL QAEDA CLOSING- IN ON AMRICA THROUGH MEXICO?

Prof Dr Colonel K Prabhakar Rao ( Retired)

Head Quarters of Al Qaeda the most notorious outfit along with its leadership was dislodged from Afghanistan after 9/11 and since then they are hiding in the North Western province of Pakistan. Sadly Pakistan has no control on this province and the lawless tribesmen are out of control and Pakistani government is rather helpless in containing them. Though Pakistan was a close ally to USA in the war against Taliban and AlQaeda all these years, it has failed to show worthwhile results to the world. It swindled American money while terrorists reemerged. The seriousness of the problem is fully evident from the occupation of certain areas by them very close to national Capital Rawalpindi and it has alarmed entire world. Strong local anti American hatred combined by the instigation of fundamentalist Mullahs and clergy surely abetted by ISI and Pak army has no doubt helped Al Qaeda to regroup and strengthen itself in the past few years. Al Qaeda has strong bases in various countries world wide ranging from Europe, Philippines to Indian sub continent and Africa. In most of the Islamic countries it is present in some form or other. At many places local terrorist groups are acting as proxy. Al Qaeda has sizeable presence in countries such as (1) :

Afghanistan ,Azerbaijan, Algeria, America, Britain, Bosnia, Bangladesh, Canada, Chechnya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Egypt, Jordan, India, Kosovo, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Somalia, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Uzbekistan, Tunisia, Uruguay, Uganda, Yemen.

After the 9/11, USA has tightened internal security and has taken stringent measures to prevent any type of Al Qaeda inspired actions in the country. America has world wide interests and it has many civil and military installations all over the world at strategic locations and these too are threatened. Attacks on American embassies in past at various places is the proof of American vulnerability to the terrorist actions. Al Qaeda in all probabilities would aim at following conventional attacks:

1. Attacks on American embassies in various countries mostly by bomb blasts, car explosions, and Commando attacks. The security of these installations is the responsibility of host countries and in spite of security in past attacks took place.

2, Attacks on American battle ships and commercial sea going vessels berthing at various ports are likely to be carried out. Earlier American battle ship was attacked in the port of Yemen some years ago.

3. Hijacking US bound American planes or attacking them at air ports and causing mid air explosions by suicide bombers. America has already experienced such mishaps in 9/11.

4. Targeting US military installations by suicide attackers. I It experienced such attacks on Pearl harbor however by Japanese forces in WWII. Such attacks by AlQaeda can not be ruled out once it acquires missile power.

5. Apart from above conventional tactics of destruction, Al Qaeda would try to acquire weapons of mass destruction such as nuclear weapons that could be the ultimate danger. This would be possible from taking over control of failed state such as Pakistan that is already fighting Taliban in it’s own country. Whole world is very much apprehensive of the danger of taking over of Pakistan by Taliban ( A proxy for AlQaeda). If this materializes Al Qaeda would be equipped with nuclear weapons and the delivery systems too. President Obama on one hand assures that Pak nukes are safe with Pak army and Taliban has no chance of taking over them. On the other hand he is funding Pak nuclear programmes by granting more aid that would surely be diverted to stock pile nuclear bombs. Thus American President in one way paving the way for more crisis in Subcontinent. Taliban has grown very strong in NWFP in Pakistan and evenformer governments including the English men could not control the tribes men effectively. Englishmen waged many wars with the tribes men and brought some discipline. However the aspect of Islam plays the card now. Al Qaeda too would bolster their efforts and attract fundamentalist scientists into its fold and could also develop such weapons clandestinely. Nuclear science has no more remained the prerogative of West and Dr Khan has blown the myth apart from Indian scientists. Chinese have done it. Now it is the work of Arabs and Iranians. People such as Dr Khan of Pakistan would be too happy to do such things. There is a great risk of fundamentalists getting trained in some good universities undetected under false names and then switching over to AlQaeda to develop such weapons. Money surely is no problems for AlQaeda apart from technical know how. The rogue nations will be too happy to transfer the technology to these thugs. It is most probable that Al Qaeda would build its own bomb in the region of Waziristan
and blackmail the world in very near future if it fails to swallow Pakistan. The apathy of US government till date in dealing with Pakistan firmly would be the sole factor for such outcome and then it remains fait accompli. It becomes therefore essential to be very careful in admitting students into sensitive training programmes at various universities by all nations who do not subscribe to terrorism..

6. Al Qaeda could also transport a dirty bomb into US port through a sea going vessel to cause destruction in American main land.

7. AlQaeda in its latest plan could introduce biological weapons into American Main land through Mexican tunnels that were made by underworld dons some time ago (2).This was recently disclosed by an AlQaeda detainee.

Al Qaeda succeeded in attacking American main land by plunging American hijacked airliners into WTC towers and it was most unexpected and took the country by great storm and surprise. Although there was great indignation, power of America has not been lost or reduced by the act of 9/11. In fact, it made America more determined to fight these thugs world wide in spite of severe financial drain. It is different that Americans subsequently were vexed up with Iraq war and continued war in Afghanistan and voted out President Bush who led the war in most difficult times after World War II.. It continues to fight them world wide. Al Qaeda probably aims at another sensational attack on America to make its presence felt, this time with more serious ramifications. Nothing can be taken easy. Carrying a nuclear weapon into USA main land is probably improbable through tunnels as foreseen by some experts ( Pseudo ?) and biological weapons could be easier to carry and cause devastation that too silently. This could be the main reason for such tactics such as sneaking through the tunnels across the Mexican border with the connivance of underworld (2). Al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. Southern border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times. “Four pounds of anthrax — in a suitcase this big -= carried by a fighter through tunnels from Mexico into the U.S. are guaranteed to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour if it is properly spread in population centers there,” the recruiter said (3)

In such scenario How America is going to protect its people from Al Qaeda that appears to be determined to execute much more devastating damage in American mainland. Causing damage to various American installations outside the main land is pursued by Al Qaeda without respite. However causing serious damage materially and in terms of human lives within main land of America appears to be the motto of Al Qaeda at present. The big question in front of Americans is how to prevent these actions?

Such actions will be possible by the connivance of some outfits that operate within America. Who are these likely outfits that want to harm the hand that feeds them. Even 9/11 could be executed by Al Qaeda with the help of internal agencies and there can not be any doubt about this fact . Therefore it is most essential for USA to fight its own enemies within its main land (4). Recent speech by President Obama in Egypt calling for mutual understanding between America and Muslim world although is welcome can not make much difference to Al Qaeda. Although President was apologetic towards certain American policies towards Arab world, in the past, good things done by America in the past has been sidelined. Although the speech goes in good humor is unlikely to eliminate threat from Al Qaeda. America can not lower its guard and if it does it would invite Al Qaeda attack sooner or late in a devastating manner. Al Qaeda is not an organization that is open to logic and is driven by medieval Muslim Wahhabi thought calling for Islamization of world and restoration of Caliphate. This threat has to be fought with much more vigor till each and every member of the outfit is eliminated.
