I left Islam some 30 years ago after I had read the Qur'an a number of times with enormously good intentions to benefit from it. The more I got into it the more I discovered that there was nothing in it edifying or helping me to become a better human being. Even though I came from a very strongly Muslim family, I decided to respectfully depart. you know better that as a human race we are very  " tribal " , always worried what will my family say ? what will the neighbors think , etc. but for me it was more important what my heart and conscious said. Needless to say I suffered with the rejection of my family and friends, but I am at peace with myself. The reason I am writing to you was not to talk about myself, but to thank you for your scholarship and honesty in not only what you write on your web site but also for the book you wrote " Understanding Muhammad ". I can not believe the amount of research that went into writing it. I read it cover to cover and visited my town library and requested that they buy a copy for the benefit of the public. Not only your book is an eye opener as why Islam is what it is and how it came about, but one learns so much about the human nature and the psychology that drives one to be what one is. I look at the world and people I come across with a new perspective as a result of reading your book. I won't take up more of your time , but felt compelled to congratulate you for your scholarly work and thank you for shedding light in the midst of darkness. I have many many intelligent Muslim friend, some professors of major universities, who are nominal Muslims, never having read their own Qur'an, not knowing what's in it, yet prepared to defend it with all their so called " strength " which I find unbelievable. Thank you again, Regard, An admirer and your country man !!  Labib
