PDF versionA story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one, who had been slapped, got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After the friend recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone: "TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"
The other friend replied: "When someone hurts us, we should write it down in sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Are you sure? Many stories from Sufi traditions were in fact plagiarized from pre-Islamic Buddhism or Zoroastrianism stories. Take for example the story of Ibrahim Ibn Adham, the Sufis of Balkh, which was quite similar with the story of Buddha in the beginning of his conversion from a mighty sovereign to an ascetic. This Sufi abandoned his own kingdom, including his wife and child in favor of leading a life of a hermit. All the legends about the asceticism and celibacy of Sufis in the past might be stolen from pre-Islamic literature in order to give Islam another tasty flavor. Could it be another form of whitewashing and filtering process?
One thing that we can be sure, true Islam or real Islam, apart from Sufism, does not have this story at their disposal. Next time, get your facts straight. There are many sects in Islam out there.
Humanity is but one family. :)
I don't agree with this
I don't agree with this story. It sounds very nice but I don't agree with it.
If you let the wind remove a hurt you invite more hurt. That is why the Jews have chronicled their hurts, and the holocaust in particular. Despite setting it all in stone, people still deny it. But it helps, I think, that the stone chronicles are there to be displayed. It makes it harder for the deniers. Not impossible, just harder. If you let the wind blow the hurt away, you make it way way too easy for the deniers.
