Hyderabad the 400 years old historical city and busy center for IT activities in India is also the nerve center and infamous for many communal troubles, riots and terrorist plots and actions (1). Now it has also credited itself with actions of intolerance towards women who were critical about religion. In the latest development, Tasleema Nasreen the famous woman Bengali writer of Lajja (Shame) fame has hit the head lines. She was persecuted in her country Bangladesh allegedly for hurting sentiments of Muslims and is now staying in Calcutta under the protection of the government. She was recently invited to a function at press club in Hyderabad by a group of journalists.
Her presence in the city and at the function was sensed and realized by the activists of local strong fundamentalist party All India Majlis Ittehad ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) (although it claims to be secular) that flexes its muscles on various occasions particularly on matters of Islam. It is led by the family of Sultan Salauddin Owaisi ( Who is no more now) who was a successful Member of Parliament from the city several times and has great clout among Muslims. Now his elder son is a Member of Parliament while another son Akbaruddi Owaisi is the state legislator who is involved in the episode. There is another such organization called Majlis Bachao Tehrik (MBT) formed by a breakaway group from AIMIM with strong presence in some of the Muslim dominated areas of old city. These two parties are at each others throat.
In fact, MIM has long historical identification with Nizam's rule in former Hyderabad princely State that tried to declare independence after India gained independence from English rule in 1947. The militant Razakar (Volunteer) movement that let loose a reign of terror in the State at the behest of the ruler and Director General of Police Deen yar Jung was spearheaded by Kasim Razvi (self styled Field Marshall) who was very closely associated with MIM. He was the commander of Razakars that was an armed fundamentalist Islamic organization enjoying state's patronage. The Razakar duly abetted by the ruler committed gravest crimes on Hindus of the State and committed mass rapes, murders, lootings, killings and all types of gory acts. After police action in Sept 1948 by the Indian army, Razakars were crushed and many were killed and the force was disbanded. The king of Hyderabad, Nizam 7, Mir Osman Ali Khan Bahadur (Brave), Nizam ul Mulk Asif Jah surrendered and agreed to merge the state with the Indian union (He had no option). Kasim Razvi was arrested tried and put behind bars for many years for the Bibinagar dacoity case. The disbanded Razakars slowly merged into the society. The party MIM still is continuing after some initial hiccups and now represents the Muslim strength along with MBT in Hyderabad city. The Indian Government with its weak knees had no courage to punish the Nizam and he was made the governor of Hyderabad state to appease Muslims. This policy continues till today.
The three legislators and their goons condemning the writer from Bengal crashed into the meeting at the press club and threw abuses at the lady and made attempts to physically assault her that was resisted by the other members. There was a great scuffle and she was saved and escorted away by the police who came later to the press club as usual like in Hindi films. Some of the journalists who resisted the attack received injuries in the scuffle. In fact, the threat to Nasreen was great and probably she would have been killed by the goons had they succeeded in laying hands on her. Police are in the process of filing cases against the legislators who issued death threat calls to Nasreen (Now they claim they filed cases and nothing further is known). There is also a charge that the police are scared to take action against these legislators fearing trouble from the minority community. They are going slow. As usual the State government declares vaguely that the law would take its own course and no one would be spared. Surprisingly, the police also filed a case against Nasreen for hurting the sentiments of Muslims on the complaint by the legislators (2). The TV interviews of the legislators have revealed that they would kill her if she visited the city again. They even stated that they were Muslims first. In a democratic society there is no place for such violent and mindless acts. There are methods to express protest if aggrieved. The incident is a reminder to the Salman Rushdie case and Iran. This is clear indication of the mind set of a section of Muslims.
One feels aghast at the events and the attitude of the legislators who claim that they represent people at the legislature. What types of people are being elected? Can we call them representatives of people? It is only in India that people who give death call to others get away and roam freely without being imprisoned behind bars. Such appeasement policies of government have already done great damage to the nation and peace in society. Confidence of people has been shattered in ability of the government in tackling such situations vigorously with firm hand. In fact, police intelligence should have got the smell and made arrangements at the press club instead of waiting for a request. The tragedy is that the fundamentalists got the news earlier than the police personnel and this indicates the poor precautionary measures and intelligence. In fact, the arrival of Tasleema Nasreen and her programmes in the city should have been found out by the State intelligence units and actions taken accordingly to prevent any trouble. As a matter of fact the various functions of importance and places of importance are to be monitored by the intelligence units. Although police claims that no protection was sought from them, the episode could have been prevented by better police intelligence and networking. As usually depicted in Indian movies, police arrived last, after all the bashing has been done, to catch the culprits and thank the hero and say that no one can escape the law.
Unfortunately there was no worthwhile response from Muslim intelligentsia against the dastardly attack on Nasreen. By and large, Muslims are against Tasleema and it was very difficult to go against the local sentiment for them. In fact Muslim intellectuals were always found wanting in expressing condemnation against such violence and are scared to express their opinion. In fact, the majority of this community has probably approved such attack. Can this be accepted in a democratic society like India (3)? Otherwise what is the difference between a Taliban rule and present rule? There is a definite need to take very strong action against the erring legislators who in fact brought a bad name to the community of legislators and disqualify them permanently as members of the legislature apart from proceeding against them for criminal intimidation and for assault on defenseless woman and posing death threats to her. Police say they are finding whether these threats are only momentary outbursts or planned actions to see the end of Tasleema Nasreen in the future (4). Even the High Court of Andhra Pradesh expressed shock over the behavior of these goons and legislators. The funniest part is that these persons were felicitated by the AI MIM supremo Sultan Salauddin Owaissi at a function. The news papers too gave a wide coverage to such shameful acts. What a shameful act indeed? Are we staying in a civilized society or Taliban ruled Waziristan or erstwhile Afghanistan? Is India, Hyderabad in fact turning into a Taliban ruled Afghanistan, Mullah led Iran and similar outfits? If government lets these goons and law breakers escape, surely it will soon turn into a Taliban style situation in the State and city. It is a shame to the city and society that Tasleema Nasreen was attacked and given death threats which speaks about the growing intolerance towards others in the society. The incident has no doubt internationally sullied the image of India. This also proves the intolerance towards Women in Islam to a greater extent.

They should be protected and there voices, books, videos should be mass circulated. All government should have law and resources to protect these precious souls and no ruffian can harm them.
'Ex-muslim' or 'apostate' title is a matter of pride. Being born a muslim is a chance, but to come out of the quagmire of Islam needs courage, dedication and truthfulness.

Women have been made to think that getting a beating is so holy. No wonder allah said he made women stupid. Tabari 1:280. A woman in Iran asked the judge to ask her spouse to beat her less than every day. In Pakistan and Afghanstan women are killing themselves rather than returning to husbands to be beaten by those holy men of Islam. A country who believes in true Secularism should deny residence permit to a person as long as his / her religion disregard other religions and show intolerance towards them as this type of thinking goes against the Secular constitution or law. We have seen in recent past that public expressions against a religion have been described as a crime and responsible persons have been jailed.
Before allowing a Muslim to live in a secular country, he should be asked in writing if he believes in Koran / Islam, if answer is yes than it simply means that he also believes in discrimination and intolerance towards other faiths and thus, should be denied residence-ship to live in a secular country.

I so admired Ayaan Hirsi Ali when she was in Holland and I defended her always, when she was criticized or slandered by Muslims, who really hated her, or, you know, political correct Westerners. Many of them somehow pitying these poor Muslims, or being plain ignorant.
You see, many people in Holland are unaware of any big danger. They look myopically only national. And the minority of Muslims in Holland, maybe 1 million of 17 million, look harmless and charming enough. But they are in large part ultimately NOT loyal to Holland or secular society, but to worldwide Islam. A religion of 1.5 billion and growing fast, especially in secular countries. Many Muslims may see Holland as DAR-UL-HARB. And looking global we see very unjust, unfair competition between Islam and the other faiths.
Kafir123's idea about conditions on Muslims in secular countries is a good seed. It must be someday be able to get a majority vote, but for that it must be worked out a lot.
Also I like to express my idea, that it is only the Divine-revelation-myth that the Muslims have to ditch. They can view their Islamic upbringing with many wisdoms in it as OK. But they should not LIMIT themselves to it. They should not view Islamic doctrine as superseding or prohibiting all other guidance. But instead should supplement their Islamic ideas with free choice of much other guidance. In Science, Philosophy, other religions. They should become wiser, broader looking people.

b. The unruly conduct of such people and helplessness in society in general
c.Failure of governmnet in AP in maintaining peace foreseeing the troubles particularly when Tasleema came into Hyderabad.
d.Pseudo secularism and appeasement policies in India towards Muslims
e. Failure of govermnment to punish culprits as per law
As you said, appeasement policies of the government since 1947 even after creating Pakistan have created conditions in India where most of the Mulsims feel that they have special status.The vote bank politics of the parties have ruined the country. Even today trouble makers are roaming free. In fact as you said eye for eye should have been the answer as per many people. But law can not be taken into hand by the people. Indian society particularly Hindus are more tolerant. Violence is not to be recommended and it is essential to bring radical changes in the governing laws and stop appeasement policies towards Muslims. the basic democratic functioning in India is defective and with mulitparty system, it is chaos today.

Look the things at ground level as Muslim scholar really do not see credibility in Hadith any more. You do not need to bring reference to show the status of women in Islam, one can look at the Islamic nations and can also read the news regarding that.
Even after the Partition in the name of Islam, Hindus could not get hold of their religious places. Just after the partition they should have taken all of their religious places which were destroyed & rebuild by the Islamic invaders.

In case of Gujarat, How could a group of converted Muslims have even thought of Burning 50 Hindus alive inside the train? Is Muslims are minority or Hindus are minority? And even after the incident only few hundred Muslims were killed along with 400 to 500 Hindus.
