Indonesia and Islamic Terrorism

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friendPDF versionPDF versionLee Jay Walker Picture above: an Islamic School in Indonesia The government of Indonesia faces many internal problems because of the geographical reality of this nation and ethnic and religious tension does engulf Indonesia from time to time. However, what is worrying is the possible collusion between radical Sunni Islamists and the security services of Indonesia. Therefore, is collusion happening in places like Sulawesi and West Papua (Irian Jaya) or is it a long-term goal of containing Christians and ethnic minorities? If we turn the clock back to 2001 and focus on events in that year, then it is clear that either collusion was happening or events happened because it was a direct policy of the government of Indonesia? This applies to Laskar Jihad because this brutal Sunni Islamic terrorist organization sent even more fighters to central Sulawesi in order to persecute Christians. Laskar Jihad, like other past or current Islamic terrorist organizations, is brutal, barbaric, and cowardly. Laskar Jihad, just like other radical Sunni Islamic terrorist organizations, believe that it is their Koran-Hadith inspired duty to kill innocents and to install fear. Therefore, the region of Sulawesi was a paradise for them to cause mayhem and to create a major gulf between both communities. Given this, events spiralled out of control and inter-religious clashes erupted because these outsiders to Sulawesi desired to kill in the name of Islam. However, much more disturbing is the role of the government of Indonesia or elements within the security services and military. After all, Laskar Jihad was given a free reign to enter the region and this radical Sunni Islamic terrorist network was not removed from this delicate region. Therefore, surely collusion was taking place, if so, then how can religious or ethnic minorities feel secure in Indonesia? After all, it is noticeable that in Sulawesi and West Papua that Islamists and the government of Indonesia do have vested interests which overlap. Also the situation in East Timor in the past mirrored covert operations based on systematic terror and fear. Yet East Timor belonged to the “old world” of nationalism and preserving the nation state of Indonesia. However, just like the Palestinian situation, it became clear that Islamic terrorism and militant organizations were on the rise. The secular nature of Palestinian resistance now lies in tatters because Hamas and others now have a clear Islamic agenda, therefore, Sulawesi and West Papua are seeing a “new world” whereby Islamists have an ideological motive in spreading hate and dhimmitude. Zachary Abuza, the author of Militant Islam in Southeast Asia, Crucible of Terror, states “The government never prevented the Laskar Jihad militia from coming, nor did it try to expel them. Muslim paramilitaries were reportedly armed with machine guns (including M-16s) and rocket-propelled grenades, forcing thousands of Christians to flee.” This raises serious issues because it appears that the government of Indonesia and various radical Islamic organizations do share a common ground. Of course, many Indonesian political leaders do not share the same theme but important elites within powerful institutions do share similar concerns, albeit from different perspectives. Zachary Abuza comments that “First, Jafar Umar Thalib and the Laskar Jihad have considerable political support. Vice President Hamzah Haz has been a staunch defender of the organization and helped get Thalib acquitted in January 2003.” Zachary Abuza also states that “…while the military has at times had to employ force against the Laskar Jihad, the reality is that the two organizations have the same goal in preventing secessionist movements from succeeding, as happened with East Timor.” However, the Indonesian government will clampdown when vested interests are threatened and this applies to Islamic terrorist attacks in Bali or against hotels, and other economic based attacks. Also, it appears that the government will take action against international Islamic jihadists rather than home-grown Islamists. Once more, Zachary Abuza comments that “Until the Bali bombing, Indonesia took few constructive measures in the war on terrorism. The Singaporean, Malaysian, Philippine, and U.S. governments all expressed utter frustration with the Indonesian government, and despite many appeals, the Indonesians did not arrest any Indonesian suspects wanted abroad.” Therefore, just like the government of Pakistan which manipulated radical Sunni Islamists to cause mayhem in Afghanistan and Kashmir; the government of Indonesia had similar vested interests when it applied to domestic issues. However, the Pakistan government can no longer control elements within Pakistan because Islamists have been emboldened and they desire to enforce Islamic Sharia law and dhimmitude throughout the nation. Indonesia does not face this problem because the centre is much stronger but it is a dangerous game to play and it is clear that religious minorities and secularists in Indonesia are worried about this. Also, Islamists will have ample opportunities to stir mayhem because various parts of Indonesia remain tense and another major incident could easily ignite tensions. The people of West Papua may also witness Islamization because of increasing Muslim migration and Islamic organizations which have a shared agenda with the government of Indonesia. In an article published by Asia News in 2006 it stated that “Islamic extremist groups are entering West Papuan territory, with the consent of elements of the Indonesian army, to set up bases there.” Therefore, this part of Indonesia faces severe problems and Islamic radicals and government agencies have similar objectives. Given this, many Papuans are worried about religious persecution and state-sanctioned persecution. Therefore, Christian areas of Indonesia face a frontal attack against them and this applies to Javanization, Islamization, direct government policies, and the threat of Islamic terrorism in sensitive parts of Indonesia is always possible. This policy does not apply to the whole of Indonesia and it must be mentioned that this nation is very complex because Christians have much greater freedom in Indonesia than in the majority of mainly Muslim nations. Yet for Christians in sensitive areas of national interest or in areas of distinct divisions, then the situation is very different. Despite this, it is clear that the implementation of Islamic Sharia law is a worry for all religious minorities, moderate Muslims and secularists. Therefore, radical Islamic organizations must not be given a free reign because if this happens, then the only victory will be for the dark forces of humanity and this means radical Sunni Islam and the implementation of Sharia Islamic law. It is now vital that pressure is put on all nations which are colluding with radical Islamic terrorist organizations or with radical Islamic educational institutions because this is where the brainwashing begins. Therefore, more pressure must be put on Indonesia to clampdown against radical Islamic institutions and to stop the manipulation of these networks when it comes to secessionist problems within Indonesia.

Islam and moslems are like

Islam and moslems are like pile of garbage in the middle of civilisation.Do nothing to remove this garbage, the crap piles up and spreads to engulf every one around.Remove the garbage or suffer.simple.Can not contain the garbage then suffer the stink of islam. The grabage has to be eliminated. There are plenty of examples .lebanon was a peaceful country until the garbage moslems reached 20% mark and now its a moslem cess pool with christians leaving or fleeing lebanon.India was a peaceful place till the islamic garbage piled up and stank the rest out to create greater pile of garbage the porkisthan.
The same is true in Malayasia, philipines,Thailand etc.The garbge has to accumulate up to a point and then it spontaneously explodes spreading the stink of islam far and wide.

I am an Indonesian ex-Muslim

I am an Indonesian ex-Muslim turn atheist. I less worry that Indonesia might becoming Pakistan, Kashmir or Afghanistan. Here is why:

1. The lifestyle of Indonesian Muslims are very different than their counterparts, mostly, the Middle Eastern. I can say this is the only one Muslim majority country whom citizen living blend together all religions and ethnics in a peaceful harmony.

2. Muslims as well as the ulemas here practicing and following the "peace and tolerant version" of Islam which is not the true Islam, and they are kept ignorant.

3. Most muslims condem terorrism and deny it as the teaching of Islam.

4. Yes, it is true some incidents did happen as in Papua, Bali, Kalimantan and other places. Not to disrespect hundreds of victim in anyway, but they were only some sparks of fireworks, blazzing and shocking a second then peace the next second. Every country has its own problem and friction.

5. Yes, there are Laskar Jihad, Majelis Mujahidin, etc. However, most Indonesian Muslims consider them as a bunch of insane people.

6. Remember that the terorrist top leader is Malaysian and now starting eaten by worms in his cold grave.

With FFI and FFI Indonesia, more and more Indonesian Muslims will leave Islam much before screwed by its evil teachings.

kardiman Great to hear that

kardiman

Great to hear that you got away from the demented man's hallucinations, I'm an ex-Muslim too though I'm far away from Asia, it is encouraging to hear that Muslims actually break lose from that bone cracking bondage, as a child I didn't know that people in Malaysia and Indonesia were Muslims, the virus has spread far and wide I guess, I really respect people of integrity, to believe in a religion without a single evidence to the point of killing other people is shear madness, I hope the majority of the Indonesian Muslims will remain as you said; ignorant of the real Islam, but I still want to know their attitude towards the Jews and the united states, if their ignorance of Islam include indifference towards the Jews and the US then we may be dealing with a whole new group of Islamists, hang in there, trust your "reason" as opposed to "unreason" never bow down to any putative deity or have your conclusion included in the premise.

@kardiman # I less worry

@kardiman

# I less worry that Indonesia might becoming Pakistan, Kashmir or Afghanistan.

I'm worry a lot, my friend. a lot! As long as the ulemas keep preaching hatred towards minority (non muslim), preaching how perfect sharia law is, how bad (or haram) Pancasila is, etc... they (muslims) don't need taleban to destroy Indonesia. They can build a new "godly Army" instead. They only need koran, ulemas, brain washed muslims and so on to start that "transformation". What do you think about the "call for sharia" in Indonesia? How about the Hizb-ut-Tahrir propagandists? How come such "civilized people" want to follow that barbaric law?!??

1. I'm sure many muslims in Indonesia are warm-hearted people. But that alone can't stop the ulemas and of course the koran to tell them that any non-muslim (kafir) are halal to kill and many other bad things. If their ulemas (even muhammad) can't spread love, who else can?

Have a look at some of these haram and halal lists in "peaceful" Islamic perpective:

- It is haram to steal an egg from a Muslim, punishable by cutting hands and feet, but halal to rob non Muslim's commercial caravans, rewarded by share of the booty.
- It is haram to slaughter an animal in a name other than God but halal to slaughter a human being in the name of God.
- It is haram to watch television but halal to watch beheadings and stoning.
- It is haram to trade alcohol but halal to trade human beings.
- It is haram to listen to music but halal to listen to wailing of innocent women and children of the beheaded critics and apostates.
- It is haram to see a movie but halal to kill an infidel.
- It is haram to even break the heart of a single innocent person if he is Muslim, but halal to behead all the innocent men of a community and sell their innocent women and children in slavery if they are non Muslims.

and so on...,,, I'm sure in FFI we all read these "peaceful words" many times.

2. I'm sure we can find one or two ulemas that preach those magic words (i.e peace, tolerant, etc). But most of them are in form of taqiyya. Deep down in their hearts, they follow their "peaceful-prophet" muhammad's deeds.

3. When WTC was collapsed, almost every muslim friends of mine laughed and praised the taleban for their "godly Work". Of course, guantanamo bay too screamed a lot of "allahu akbar".

4. no doubt. Islam is the root of many evil things in this world. Have a look at Thailand with it's Islamic separatist movement, Philippine with Moro, Indonesia with DI/TII (now mostly with Jamaah Islamiyah, etc), etc...

5. Because they think that those organizations just bring a lot of trouble to their magic words of "How peaceful and tolerant Islam is". You can't tell people that Islam is peaceful by repeatedly screaming that Islam is peaceful in it's every barbaric occasions.

6. Thanks to Densus-88 for that. But beware, there are many other noordins (made in koran) waiting for that "perfect moment".

# With FFI and FFI Indonesia, more and more Indonesian Muslims will leave Islam much before screwed by its evil teachings.

I hope so. Thanks to good people at FFI as well.

The problem as I see it is

The problem as I see it is that there is a world-wide trend of radicalisation and Islamisation taking place.
this is the rest of the Saudi-backed and funded Salafi/Wahhabi teaching that now has a global reach.
Kardiman may well be correct that in Indonesia \Muslims as well as the ulemas here practicing and following the “peace and tolerant version” of Islam\.
However as the also points out this \is not the true Islam, and they are kept ignorant.\ So, indeed most Indonesian Moslems may well \condem terorrism and deny it as the teaching of Islam.\

So Kardiman states (by implication) \true Islam\ is NOT the \peace and tolerance\ version.
My question to Kardiman is this: how many Mosques have been built with Saudi money? How many of your Ulema trained by Saudi teachers?
If the answer is other than zero, then you can expect the spread of \true Islam\ in its most violent and intolerant form (Wahhabism).

the same thing has happened here in the UK. Mosuqes have been built with Saudi or Mid-East money.
Imams have trained in Mis-East schools or radical Pakistan madrassahs and have brought their radicalism to these shores, where - as I have shown in other posts - it is spreading through the mosques like a cancer.

Excellent article.

Excellent article.

Hi BD, "...but I still want

Hi BD,

"...but I still want to know their attitude towards the Jews and the united states..."

Majority of muslims here do not care with that. At least, crowd at McDonalds and Starbucks all the time.:)

Free Man my friend,

Not all ulemas preach hatred toward non Muslims. Most of the ulemas are ignorant and keep on preach the peaceful Islam. Watch the TV during Ramadhan, all famous ulemas's words were so far from resentful. And the hardline ulemas like Abu Bakar Ba'asyir and Habib Rizieq are banned, never shown on TV.

Hi jonc,

"...how many Mosques have been built with Saudi money? How many of your Ulema trained by Saudi teachers?.."

Yes, more and more Wahabbi's mosques were built. Many students were sent to Saudi and enjoy a free of charge tuition. However, the hate-preachers are very rare and not prefferable by most people.

Some additions to my above comment.
I guess it is our culture which prevent or at least minimize the hatred feeling. People will say, I have been living with my Christians neighbors for tens of years, why should I hate them now?
In the last elections, all Islamic Parties votes were slipped down. The top three are secular parties.
Some worries, yes, but to adopts Sharia Law, it is still far away, and I do hope by that time Indonesian Muslims have had their eyes open to see the real Islam.

Some days ago stoning was proposed to be applied in Aceh, a part of me wants it to be successfully adopted. So it can be a good example for other parts of Indonesia to see how evil is Sharia.

Hey Kardiman, Good to know

Hey Kardiman,

Good to know that you are an ex muslim. I agree with you 90%, because the peaceful ignorant muslim is non religious muslim in indonesia. In pesantren, they still have this arrogance and superior attitude towards other faiths. I want to know your opinion about certain motivator goes by the name Mario Teguh. This man talks and acts unislamic, but he claim to be muslim (by born). I think he is one of the muslim reformer, he knew that islam is barbaric and he tries to change it. We need more of people like him in the future.

hi Kardiman, I'm glad that

hi Kardiman,
I'm glad that the extremist preachers are not popular in Indonesia and that hate-preachers are banned from TV. (But what about the internet web)
Here in the UK here one problem can come if the Mosques have "guest" preachers who are extremist, or if extremist groups that use the mosques.
Infiltration by extremists has to be guarded against. One way in which they infiltrate (again I speak to the UK situation) is to avoid the Mosque leaders and elders and set up "youth groups", all appearing above-board and and moderate.
But in reality, extremist teaching is quietly introduced and those youth that appear susceptible are then identified and drawn in by the lure of deeper understanding (or some such) to a "special teaching group" or "advanced studies" etc.
If the mosque does not monitor all its activities, extremism can inveigle its way in.

I have to say that I'd be wary of ANY Saudi trained preacher. Saudia Arabia is the birth place of Wahhabism and promotes this form of Islam in its mosques, literature etc.

You wrote: "Some days ago stoning was proposed to be applied in Aceh, a part of me wants it to be successfully adopted. So it can be a good example for other parts of Indonesia to see how evil is Sharia."

I'm sorry, but I don't think you have thought through the consequences of this 'law' in practice.
Look at what happens in Afghanistan. It is only the women who get stoned due to the witness requirements.
Under Sharia law, rape is almost un-provable (4 male witnesses needed), but (by bringing the charge) the woman is admitting "Unlawful intercourse" and if married, she is considered an adulteress.
This law is a "rapists charter".
Needless to say, non-muslim women are even worse off (if possible).

That said, I found your post generally encouraging and I am pleased to think that Indonesia is a working poly-ethnic society.

But please, PLEASE, oppose the imtroduction of ANY Sharia law (and especially the criminal law) anywhere in your fair land. It is the thin edge of a very dangerous wedge that will tear communities apart. Law (within a Country) should be universal and uniform.

Kardiman “Muslims as well

Kardiman

“Muslims as well as the ulemas here practicing and following the “peace and tolerant version” of Islam which is not the true Islam, and they are kept ignorant”

Me:

It is good to know that you are an Ex-Muslim. And I also agree that as long as Indonesia has free of media let it be internet or television, people will read and learn about true Islam and eventually leave this cult.

I have always wondered that why the Bombing took place at Bali, which is an Area, Mostly dominated by Non Muslims (90% or so) and also believe that these Non Muslims must be making good contribution to the Indonesian economy in the form of foreign currency and taxes as Bali is a very famous tourist destination. Not to mention that there are certain other regions which will face the problem if Government does not wake up and take preventive action against these Sunni Muslims / extremist.
.
I believe that extremist Islam / True Islam has been infiltrating into the Indonesian Islamic society gradually, however it does not seem very bad from the out side.

well, im a 14 years old

well, im a 14 years old muslim boy from indonesia, and i dont know that islam has a really bad name in the world' eye until this year,

until that malaysian terrorist come, and i also doesnt understand why people from middle east are so mean!! theyre not human!

Agree to Kardiman, my

Agree to Kardiman, my countryman

Indonesia at war. What war? who against who? Not clear. Some group ready to butcher another group. Thanks to democracy, bring us to this condition
Indonesia is far from ready to receive democracy, but you, western people, push this agenda.
In two decade, much our our limited budget, spending to leader election, president, governor, mayor/bupati (?) and representative election. We cannot build new infrastructure.
Democracy bring us to twilight zone. Now many our representative elected because his religion, not his competency. And behind them are extremist. In 2004, 1999, 1994 election, nationalist party loosing badly to islamic party. In 2004 elected-Yudhoyono must share 60% his cabinet with this group, because his new party only get small vote. In this period many that thing happen. Now 2009, Yudhoyono, elected with stronger backup his party. His party get much more voted (20% voted). You can see in this week, our policeman (not our security force) especially Densus 88- US trained task force-, success killed 9 year most wanted terrorist.
We, minority ethnic, minority religion suffer badly from this democracy process. We must accept many abuse from the majority. Equality and justice may not happen in my life time.
Pressure from all nation? We proudly people, act not well against threat, including me, happily to challenge any threat.
How you can help us? militia like laskar jihad, must deal with same language, same power. If some radical people yell Allahuakbar to gain more support from silent majority Muslim, to burn our church, condemn our pray, we must behead they head first. Put they head into pike in front their home. I think you call it by deterrent strategy. Minority can't rely on security force, political suppor, we can't get their support in right time
and with enough power. Every time radical people success burnt our church or condemn our pray, more people follow them. You can't talk human right here. They are not human when they act against humanity.

My praise for Dayak People (Christian/Pagan)-Kalimantan/Borneo Native in Sampit Incident, they successfully driven out-sent back home hundred thousand Madura's people. Hey, don't you think, Madura's are weak people. This tribes from big island in east Java are strong, ignorant Muslim. Madura one from three dominant migration tribes what you call Islamization, Javanization. Radical group try to make Sampit (South Kalimantan/Borneo) become fourth operation area, following Ambon, Palu-Sulawesi, East Timor. Before their effort become effective strategy, coordinating with Madura's people in Sampit, Dayak people still remember their war like culture, they strike first massive, come out from jungle. Thousand head beheaded in matter of days, river red with blood, fill with death body. This radical group very shock knowing they will deal with same language, they will face equal action - barbaric people. Thousand muslim warrior from all Indonesia tribes immediate cancel their voyage. The incident resolve very quickly, in matter of week. Madura's get their lesson here.
That how west nation can help us. I'm sick hear pressure from west nation, boycott, in other side unlimited fund flowing in to fuel radicalism. We need same militia power to deal this laskar jihad.

The big problem is
We have 500 province/city/county, with each election leader and representative. In some province/county/city radical group winning the election. And they become authorities, legitimate. Soon they become rock, and influence neighbour county/city. Sumatera Barat and Banten for example. The war came to new level: in written law, we losing very badly. We need desperately statesman. They already success destroy our education system, left for hedonist and fundamentalist. US Aid, Aus Aid, UE aid bring their grant to national school, who already became madrasah like. Non muslim now very hard to get affordable proper education. Our children face segregation by religion in early step education. How we can hope they become statesman? There is no sign Education Department turning back their policy, fundamentalist already to strong, in this sector.
Indonesia in dire need nationalist school, no pray school. Let parent teach their children about god, not school.
You can help in this area, not threat or pressure

In SEA, particularly in

In SEA, particularly in Malaysia, the govt had established departments like the BTN (Biro Tatanegara - loosely translated as National Regulatory System Bureau) whereby civil servants (most of them are Muslim Malays) as well as recipients of scholarships to undergo the various courses conducted by this so called bureau. The "noble" aim of this bureau is to disseminate and indoctrinate the citizens to love the country and all things Malays ... oops ... Malaysian. But what they actually do is to indoctrinate hatred for non-Muslims (the minority). For them, these non-Muslims are kafirs, pendatang (immigrant) and should go back to wherever they came from ... India, China ... even though some of these so called 'pendatang' have been living on this land way before the "Glorious Malay Malaccan Sultanate" began.

They emphasized the Supremacy of Islam, the Supremacy of Malays (... err during the times of the Malaccan Sultanate, their rulers still live in attap huts compared to other civilizations ... supremacy, huh? Living in self-denial mode. Delusional lunatics).

And of course with all these kinds of support from the govt, no wonder they have produced this terrorist Noordin Mat Top.

http://omong.wordpress.com/2009/04/30/biro-tatanegara-indoctrinating-civ...

Good source of how Islamic the Malaysian govt is where education is concerned especially for non-Muslims citizens. They collect taxes to further the cause of their own and give back shit to the non-Muslims.

Kardiman ***1. The lifestyle

Kardiman

***1. The lifestyle of Indonesian Muslims are very different than their counterparts,***

thanks to hypocricy teaching of islam and money hunger soeharto, who let US influence to spread in corrupt country of indonesia, thus those ignorant enjoying fairly semi liberal and convinience of the west, and they reluctant to let it go,
but there are millions of stupid poor people who can not enjoy such lifestyle and taking islamic to extreem

Kavir123
***I have always wondered that why the Bombing took place at Bali***
the bombing intended for US people (to retaliate aginst iraq bombing), since they are moron and cannot differentiate, they thought any blonde are US, when infact it was oz whose hang out in bali.

Bali is the last stand of hindus in indonesia, people from java (previously hindus kingdom) who refused to convert fled to bali

Already country is facing

Already country is facing economic cirisi. Is this problem is necessary in this period. We have to work toghether and improve economy.

WE CAN NO LONGER REMAIN

WE CAN NO LONGER REMAIN SILENT.
