Germany Avoids Criticizing Radical Islam and Radical Muslims

The German media and some German public figures are soft, too soft, on radical Islam and avoid critics and critique of this violent “religion.” The audio-visual media invite only uncritical talking heads. The print media publish only articles by apologists of Islam. Here are some examples:
The recent confession of the four Muslim terrorists, also called the “Suaerland Group,” who were planning to kill as many Americans in Germany as they could, was hailed by the judge, state prosecutor, and the media. The devastating terrorist attack prepared by these men was foiled from a tip by the CIA, which the German media depict as not abiding by the law and acting against human rights.
The German media and some German politicians hailed the confession and deliberately ignored the ideological/religious sources of their attack, namely the Koran and Hadith, which incite Muslims to kill non-Muslims.
In an interview with Al Arabiya TV (August 16th), Daniel Cohn-Bendit, a leading politician of the Green Party in the European Parliament, presented radical Muslims as “part of a socio-political religious movement across the world, like the RAF, the German terrorist group we had in the 1970s.”
Cohn-Bendit argued that a dialogue with radical Muslims must be established, also with the Taliban. He reminded his interviewer that he (Cohn-Bendit) and the former German foreign minister Joschka Fischer used to sympathize with the RAF. They took to the street and threw stones on the police. “As the Green Party was established as a radical social ecological movement, I joined the party. Little by little, the Green party was accepted by the German political establishment, and now it is a full-fledged political party.” Cohn-Bendit added.
Also, Cohn-Bendit praised Turkey for reconciling Islam with democracy.
The truth of the matter, the AKP, the Islamic party that is ruling Turkey is slowly but steadily Islamizing Turkey. It is also true that Islam is against democracy and formation of parties. Both the Koran and Hadith reject democracy and the formation of political parties. According to a recent poll, the ultimate aim of Islamic Turkey is Sharia, and this what the majority of Turks inside and outside turkey want to see established.
To add insult to injury, Cohn-Bendit said the maiming and killing of innocent people “has nothing to do with Islam.” And radical Muslims are fighting a justice war against their oppressors. He also argued that foreign troops must leave Afghanistan and Iraq and “leave the people of these nations in peace.”
In other words, fanatic Muslim regimes in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia must be left alone, rule against human rights and export terrorisms. Hence Cohn-Bendit and his ilk have joined the Muslim chaplains on Muslim media.
Further, Cohn-Bendit suggested that Islam “be modernized and can be modernized, like all other religions.”
Cohn-Bendit’s “arguments” about Islam is merely wishful thinking. Radical Muslims strongly believe that the Koran – which includes numerous passages that are diametrically opposed to modern human rights – is the “word of Allah.” They are also convinced that Sharia, which primarily includes the Koran, must be introduced everywhere. Appeasing radical Muslims implies ultimately accepting their Sharia. And “modernizing Islam will eventually lead to scraping the Koran or reducing it to a few pages, something which radical Muslims vehemently refuse.
Contributions of critics of radical Islam are rejected by German media. For example, The German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung published on July 10, 2009, an article by Alaa Al-Aswani in which he twists facts and argues that the West is ill-informed and biased toward Islam. “Westerners are misinformed about Islam, therefore they hate Islam and hate Muslims,” Al-Aswani says.

Many programs about Islam have been broadcast on WDR5 radio and posted on the Internet. None of them, however, mention issues of violence and discrimination against women and non-Muslims, which fill the Koran and Hadith and are practiced by many Muslim families. The WDR5 depicts Islam as a tolerant and peaceful religion, like all the others.
On the other hand, other radio programs are excoriated for criticizing Islam. On June 18, 2009, WDR5 broadcast a whole hour feature attacking the Polish Radio Maria.
Almost every month, I tour all of those mosques run by Arab imams, all over Germany whose language I understand. In every one of these mosques, the imam preaches hatred and violence against non-Muslims. Germany and the Germans are depicted as “decadent and steered by the devil.” At the end, the imam demands loudly the introduction of Sharia, “It is the law of Allah, and the best on earth.” Muslim women are urged to wear the hijab (headscarf). They are also urged to follow the advice/orders of their men as the Koran and Hadith prescribe.
However, the most atrocious parts of imams’ preaches is their incitement to hatred and violence against the Jews and Christians. All of this is ignored and tolerated by German authorities as part of free speech and religious freedom. Israel is depicted as the “aggressor” and the Palestinians as the victims. Critique of Islam is presented as “Islamophobia.”
All this being said, when someone criticizes Islam and radical Muslims, they are taken to task and branded as racists and labeled as “fascist right-wingers.”
The release of the Libyan Lockerbie bomber, Abdelbasset Ali Mohammed Al Megrahi, who murdered 270 innocent people, on allegedly “humanitarian/compassionate” grounds, was welcomed by the German media. They also favor closing down Guantanamo.
Back in Libya, Al Megrahi was interviewed by a state-run radio. He said, “Thank Allah I’m free. I’m innocent, and the British know this. Therefore, they released me.”
Omar Al Saidi, a sociology professor at Tripoli University, commented, “Libya has nothing to do with Lockerbie. The West fabricated the whole story to blackmail us and suck our money. The whole thing is a Western conspiracy.”
The German media and German politician do not take notice of all this. They are happy that Al Megrahi was released for “compassionate” grounds.
The former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic was indicted by the International Tribunal and sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes against humanity. How about Mu’ammar Al Gaddafi, the Libyan dictator? He was behind Lockerbie. But nobody in the West dares to point at him as a criminal. He also belongs behind bars.
On the contrary, Berlusconi of Italy, Sarkozy of France, and previously Tony Blair have often visited Libya to forge trade relations with Gaddafi. Democracy and human rights were never discussed.
Serbia, Zimbabwe, and Burma have no oil and no money. Therefore the West is so active in these countries about democracy and human rights. Dictators like King Abdulla of Saudi Arabia and Hosni Mubarak of Egypt are welcomed in the While House. They are even bowed to by President Obama.
With regard to democracy and human rights, the West goes selectively, and the mainstream media, especially in Germany, assert that day in and day out.
While Angela Merkel demands publicly imposing economic sanctions on Iran for its nuclear program, she supports German companies that entertain trade of highly technical equipment with the Iranian regime.
The Secretary General of the German “Welthungerhilfe” (world famine help), Wolfgang Jamann, told the daily Bildzeitung that foreign troops must leave Afghanistan. They are hampering his organization and other humanitarian aid organizations from helping the Afghans rebuild their country.
This is hilarious, bizarre, and irresponsible. Jamann’s organization is delivering development aid under the protection of such troops. Both these troops and aid organizations are under attack by the Taliban. If foreign troops left Afghanistan, Jamann’s co-workers would be massacred by the Taliban. Besides, terrorism would “flourish” across the world.
By the way, according to several studies by colleagues at the American University in Beirut/Lebanon and Cairo University, German aid organizations, including the “Welthungerhilfe” are self-benefit organizations. They have very little to do with development aid. They collect huge sums of money, through donations, to fund the lavish salaries of their employees. Jamann himself earns more that $10 thousand a month. According to the aforementioned studies, more than 80 percent of the money which these “aid organizations” collect via donations is spent on salaries and travels. Only 20 percent is spent on aid projects.
It seems that the German government and other European governments are prepared to deal with the devil if he serves their economic interests. They pay lip-service to democracy and human rights in countries like Saudi Arabia, Libya, and Egypt, if they ever do so. Germany, Britain, France, and Italy are competing to pamper states Libya, Iran, and Saudi Arabia which support terror across the globe.
According to recent opinion polls, two thirds of the population in major European countries have voraciously digested the propaganda machinery in these countries and demand withdrawing foreign troops from Afghanistan.
Apologists throughout history have never achieved anything. They have at most strengthened the forces of evil and delayed their demise. Biased economic success is temporary. It is built on sand. Only human rationale is solid and eternal.

Not meaning to insult your religion rationalist...but that makes little sense. "we use non-violence...that is until it's worthwhile to use violence. Then, the ends justify the means." Maybe I'm reading into it the wrong way. 'Violence is required to establish peace', what religion touts that?
War is necessary when enemy
War is necessary when enemy wants to kill you, wants to rape your womenfolk, kill your children or enslave them.
"Ethical war' is necessary to remove those kings or despots who is attacking you do enslaving you and harm your population and destroy peace. Thus war becomes necessary.
Recently "Hitler', "Pol Pot" etc had to be removed for establishing the PEACE.

I'm saying it's a slippery
I'm saying it's a slippery slope. As an American, the government painted a pretty good picture that Iraq was a threat to us...so we did a pre-emptive strike. Was the American Government right? By removing Saddam forcefully, were we in the wrong? I don't doubt that, quietly, most of the governments around the world were glad to see him die and that government topple while outwardly being critical of the U.S.
Where do we draw the line for Islam? I know I know, probably situational and specific to the region vs. a broad generalization. Don't get me wrong rationalist, I'm by no means a pacifist. But I do see that, when fighting monsters, there is that danger of becoming one. I'm a Christian. This is harsh to say, but Islam is evil. I would rejoice in it's destruction. Like Ali Sina, I don't not wish ill will of muslims. Ali wishes them to leave Islam and to point out the stupidity and vile things of that religion. I say we all should make sure of where we stand with our ethics and actions to set a proper example for the muslims to follow.

I feel that the tone of the
I feel that the tone of the discussion is flawed. Why is it necessary to place Islam in such a hateful violent context? To be glad to see the end of a religion suggests evil. Fundamentalists, which represent a small subset of Islamic followers are going for a violent struggle against modernity. It is an issue of interpretation, I was lectured by a wonderful woman who had the most profound understanding of the Quran, and there certainly are very progressive, human rights orientated wisdoms to be found in there.
Practically in a governance model we have not seen these rights for women pushed to the forefront, but any Christian religious government can really be criticised for the same thing. It is illegal to be a homosexual in Zambia, or to take an AIDS test unless you are married. No-one really cares or campaigns around those issues.
As a daughter of a Bishop I have grown up in a Christian home amongst progressive minds, and was taught not to fear difference. In Cape Town we have some of the most devout Muslims in the world. No one cares that these women are walking around in covered from head to toe. It really is their choice and in South Africa especially I have seen the pride with which these women wear this clothing. In my engagement with Muslim movements I have fund that they are always the first there when tragedy strikes, handing out food and clothes and assisting in any way possible. Our relationship has always been very comfortable and I find that their ability to follow their faith so devoutly is a beautiful thing.
There is a certain conversation going around which tries to paint all Muslims with the same brush. For people to feel comfortable enough to call for an end to the religion as we know it is EVIL.
Governments and political formations manipulate religious followers to support undemocratic laws. No-one called for an end to Christianity in South Africa, yet it was the Nederegerformeerde Kerk who really contributed to the principles of Apartheid structure and interpreted it from a religious perspective. Therefore killing, exploiting, enslaving people who were not White in South Africa was preached as God's will every Sunday.
I understand that the radical Muslim fundamentalist movement we see today is not limited to borders, but it is the current discourse which makes people cross over and become more radical. Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world, there is a reason for that. We need to ally ourselves with those people who are proud, practising, progressive Muslims to prevent further people from crossing over to the violent movement. We should not risk alienating our neighbours. Working together with the good people to weed out the crazies makes more sense. Certainly in South Africa we practise what we preach where "freedom of religion" is concerned.
I hereby call for meaningful participation and good will to make real progress.

Dear Ann, I like to respond as best I can to your letter, from my own point of view.
First of all, I think a government that is democratically chosen and keeps the democratic rules of autonomy of the individual, freedom of speech, constitutional state and separation of church and state is the best sort of government mankind has. Right there I see the biggest problem. Fundamentalist Islam wants to rule over mankind if it could, to take over Western Democratic countries, and this seems coming within range in the 21st century due to demographic changes. It looks like the percentage of Muslims in many Western countries will dramatically rise due to higher birthrates among Muslims, Migration. About the conversion-rate there are conflicting reports.
And in the world there are about 57 Islamic countries, most of which have no democratic government. They are either run by dictatorial regimes or even by theocratic regimes like the one in Iran. In all these countries Islam is outrageously favored over other religions. That means:
- Huge one-sided Islam-education, propaganda and stifling of opposition, or of the voices of the other religions,
– Killing, jailing or violently intimidating apostates,
- harassment of religious minorities.
- Oppression of women.
- Great poverty and lack of development.
In the Western countries and India on the other hand Muslims enjoy equal rights and apostates from other religions, or atheism, are not hindered in any way to convert to Islam. That is not reciprocal and very unfair.
We know many Muslims look at the world in a global context, please let us also do this. Only looking at your own surroundings no longer suffices, due to worldwide communication channels, like the internet, enormous amounts of traveling by humans, big migration-waves.
I think Democrats have tried and are still daily trying to conduct a dialoque with Muslims. We hear the Western democratic leaders and parties and media constantly appeasing Muslims. They often tell us that Islam is a religion of peace and that we are certainly not at war with Islam. But is this effective? Was George Bush or Tony Blair respected because of this by Muslims?
Many times when we get posts from Muslims, when we study what Islamic media, leaders, clerics in mosques are saying we discover that often they distort history in a gross manner, that they are extolling Islam to be the best religion and are massively slandering Israel, America, other religions In a very, very negative, nasty way. And they seem to assume that that gives Islam the right and destination to rule the earth, and yes, absolutely without fair elections. Many Muslims want the dumb masses to submit to God, but that means in practice to the state, and not to the choice of 51 % of the masses.
In light of this we feel it is absolutely imperative that Islam is examined and explained to all those who want to listen. All it’s texts are being scrutinized, and many non-Muslims are now more knowledgeable of them then the majority of Muslims. And all the crimes against humanity perpetrated by self-confessed Muslims are being recorded, reported about, in past and present.
And yes, Islam is much commented on, insulted. But for good reason. If there is pressure like this on Islam, and remember the pressure and propaganda from Islam on other beliefs is many times bigger and nastier, then eventually we hope that reasonable Muslims will acknowledge the big amount of truth in the criticism on it. And that they then will try to adapt Islam to democracy, because we must have both democracy and reciprocity (that means equal rights of all beliefs) on most of the earth. That is only fair and non-negotiable.
And we know that without our sort of pressure, Islam will want to keep ruling without fair elections and will want to expand that rule to democratic countries. And in debate Muslims will continue to extol their religion, telling only their propaganda. But now every day more people get more informed about Islam and the behavior of some of its followers. And if the Muslim masses remain as intransigent, silent, without opposition to their dangerous-to-us-fundamentalists, then it is only logical that we prefer as many ex-muslims (who agree with us) as possible over muslims. Whose religion in any way we find untrue. But that would not matter, it is its danger that matters on this site.

Are you sure that Allah has also created Kafirs/Unbelievers - his so called enemy? I think God has created every human being other than follower of true Islam. Your Allah, if he created all humans, does not seem to have intelligence, who is creating Believers and Unbelievers at the same time. I have been going through many sites on the internet trying to find an answer to a deep emotional problem I am going through. I am a 23 year old girl and I am in a relationship with my father's brother, my uncle. We are already in an intimate relationship and we are considering to get married after he divorce my aunt. The problem is that my social surrounding are full of hard religious people, so we are planning to get away to another state and start our new life. Although getting away will sort some of the issues but I fear someday our past will catch up with us, so we are planning to change our religion in order to give our relationship a legitimacy. I wonder if anyone can help me here by suggesting if I convert to Islam , will I be accepted socially as I have heard that its allowed to be married to your close relatives in this religion.
Would appreciate your suggestions.

- I am Freethinker and Atheism/ Freethinking would be a much better choice in view of your intense emotional dilemma, I think, Freethinkers often are much more openminded about this sort of emotional/ relational problems, much more permissive than Islam, and Freethinking, does not require you to uphold any holy books, religious beliefs, old dogma's. It only recommends to think logically. Freethinkers depend on Reason instead of on Revelation and they depend most on science and science is dedicated to the search for the truth.
-We think Islam is simply untrue, it is just an "very improbable, irrational claim" really, and there is no real good evidence for it, reason enough to stay away from it.
-More reason to stay away from it is that it is worse for women than freethinking or christianity, hinduism, buddhism and other religions are. On this site you can find a section "Islam and Women" and the articles and comments there alone should set you straight on that issue.
- And on the whole there are many disadvantages in enrolling into Islam (told here) that we think heavily outweigh any advantages there might be, not in the least concerning your children if you desire you have those.
