Meanwhile, Kuwaiti parliamentarians recently voted in favour of a legal amendment which would impose the death penalty on anyone defaming God or Islam’s prophet, Mohammed. The vote followed a recent case of alleged blasphemy on messaging website Twitter, which caused a furore in the Arab state. Around 4,000 people gathered today in front of the National Constituent Assembly, calling for the implementation of Shariaa law in the new constitution.
Shariaa is Islamic law derived from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed. Shouts of ‘takbir‘ – an affirmation of the greatness of God – and slogans such as “the people want the implementation of Shariaa” and “Islam is coming” could be heard in the tumult.
Organizers of the protest, members of the Tunisian Front of Islamic Associations, arranged separated sections for men and women, all of whom were demanding the implementation of Shariaa in the constitution.

The mufti’s statements had followed Kuwait’s move to ban churches from being constructed in the country.
Ironically, the Saudi religious leader’s comments come only months after Saudi Arabia partnered with Switzerland on an institute of tolerance. At the time, many observers called the move “unsubstantiated” in reference to Saudi’s ultra-conservative Islamic views.

Access to the internet and email service providers such as Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail has been impossible in recent days, and Iranian authorities have been emphasizing their concern over the lack of security on the web.
Reza Taghipour, Minister of Communications and Technology, said on Saturday: “Due to the lack of safety and security measures, the country sustains more harm from this technology [the internet] than benefits.”

There are contradictory reports about the timing and consistency of the new restrictions. Some bloggers have reported that the crackdown has happened ahead of the anniversary of the Islamic Revolution on February 11, which was expected to be a flashpoint for anti-government protests. But respected internet portal Ars Technica says the restrictions have been gradually implemented over the last few months. It also appears as if the firewall has not been imposed universally, with some users still able to access the websites at least some of the time.

It’s noteable that Ms. Mohammadi was found guilty of “collaborating with foreign-dependent groups, broad anti-Islamic propaganda, deceiving citizens by forming what is called a house church, insulting sacred figures and activities against national security” by the Revolutionary Court branch of Moalem Street on 18 January, after enduring five months in custody. However, the judge acquitted her of the charge of “collaborating with foreign-dependent groups” for he believed that the crime was done unintentionally. Therefore, this Christian convert was sentenced to two years in prison and the ruling was delivered to her.
