Defining Turkey Today

Turkey has been in the news lately; occasioned by Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the country, as well as its persistent attempt to join the European Union. Unfortunately, in dealing with the latter subject, not much clear information comes from the mainline news media to help us understand what the implications would be if a 70-million Muslim country became a full member of the EU.

Early in his speech in Cairo BHO mentioned “centuries of co-existence and cooperation.” When and where? For 1400 years, Islam has waged jihad against all civilizations including Western Civilization. The history of Islam from Arabia was followed by the rapid conquest of North Africa and invasion and conquest of Spain, and a thrust into France that carried the crescent to the gates of Paris.

Somalian Islamic pirates have, in recent years, steadily increased their attacks on merchant-ships in the busy Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, which has reached critical level in recent months, making the smooth operation of international trades difficult. Although American cargo-ships spared until recently, the pirates, increasingly emboldened as they have become, dared raiding an American cargo-ship, capturing its captain, Richard Phillips, on Wednesday (April 8, 2009).
