Back in 2010 in the U.K. there was the ill-fated “Project Champion” in Birmingham.
This “project” would have seen the installation and use of more than 200 CCTV cameras in the Sparkhill region of Birmingham which is a Muslim majority area.
When this was discovered an assortment of civil liberties groups along with local Muslims objected claiming that the plan unfairly targeted Muslims for surveillance. See here.
As a consequence, the cameras were never switched on and eventually they were taken down and either used elsewhere, sold on or destroyed. See here.
At a Public meeting (not recorded in the media, sadly) local Muslims objected strenuously and civil rights organisation “Liberty” also attacked the scheme.
Councillor Salma Yaqoob, then of the marvellously ironically named “Respect Party” of George Galloway fame, accused the authorities “of being deliberately ‘sneaky’” in installing the cameras.
Corinna Ferguson, legal officer of human rights group Liberty said: ‘Putting bags over cameras will not conceal the project’s true agenda, and Liberty will continue to pursue the protection of residents’ privacy under the Human Rights Act.‘
As ever the whiff of “Islamophobia” hung over the uproar.
All this resulted in the cameras not being turned on and the local Police force was castigated for “‘significant damage to community relations’ with one claim that it had ‘set relations back a decade’”.
NOW HOLD ON A MINUTE!
Haven’t we all been told that there is a “rising tide of Islamophobia” in Western Countries and that Muslims are unfairly targeted for abuse and worse by all the “racists”, “fascists” and “Islamophobes” around them?
Back then in 2010 I thought: why then would Muslims object to CCTV in their areas? Surely that would make their streets safer. All those nasty “racists” and “fascists” driving into the area to target them could be tracked. In any attack made the perps would probably be identifiable from CCTV images. Wouldn’t the likelihood of CCTV identification leading to arrest, trial and conviction on hate crime charges thoroughly deter the evil “Islamophobes” from attacking the peaceful Muslims of Sparkhill?
Surely all the peaceful and much put-upon Muslims of the area facing the dreadful discrimination of Islamophobia would heave huge sighs of relief knowing that they were safe from Islamophobes at last.
So why the fuss?
Enter the “Three Lions”:
On 20th Feb. 2013 three men, Irfan Naseer, 31, Irfan Khalid, 27, and Ashik Ali, 27 were all convicted of a terror plot that could have rivalled 9/11 in its death-toll. The attack was planned for the U.K. See here.
(Curiously, for once, the British media largely abandoned its prior practice of calling such people “Asian”, instead it described them as “coming from first generation Pakistani and Bangladeshi families”, or similar.)
Fortunately, due to a mixture of their incompetence (Ashak Ali to his wife Salma in their bugged flat: “Oh, you think this is a flipping ‘Four Lions’. We’re one man short, there’s three of us.” – Four Lions was a British black comedy about four incompetent British-Muslim suicide bombers. It is, quite literally, horribly funny.) and good work by the Police and security services their attempt was thwarted.
These delightful fellows were residents of and arrested in guess which English City? Any takers?
Yes, Birmingham.
Would anyone care to guess where in Birmingham at least some of the arrests took place?
Here is a hint:
“The ringleaders of a failed terror plot hatched in Sparkhill were convicted of planning a bombing campaign ” See here.
According to this report: “Naseer was found guilty of five counts of engaging in conduct in preparation of terrorist attacks, Khalid of four and Ali of three counts – all between Christmas Day 2010 and 19 September 2011.” when they were arrested.
Look at the dates here:
Project Champion was initiated in 2010 and Muslim and civil liberties groups got it shut down before it was operational by mid June 2010. See here.
The “three Lions” wannabe terror group were active between the end of 2010 and late 2011.
the fact that they were caught is evidence that a security operation, involving up to 400 people from the Police and security services, can thwart such attempted attacks.
But on the 23rd Feb 2013 this report states: “A [Muslim] Birmingham MP has called for the reinstatement of controversial [Project Champion] spy cameras in predominantly Muslim areas of Birmingham in the wake of a failed suicide bomb plot. Khalid Mahmood said the relaunch of the Project Champion scheme to monitor the movement of cars and people in Sparkhill, Ward End and Washwood Heath ‘could ensure the safety and security for people in Birmingham and the whole UK.’”
So now, suddenly, project Champion isn’t about invading the privacy of Muslims nor is it driven by an “Islamophobic” agenda, it will “ensure the safety and security” of both Muslims and non-Muslims alike – just as I thought in 2010 when reportage of the objections was all over the media.
Mahmood further opined: “They (the cameras) would have helped the security services enormously, particularly in the suicide bomb plot we have been hearing about.” (ibid)
Thus the cameras are now not an “Islamophobic attack” on an “innocent Muslim community”, they could have “helped the security services enormously” in preventing “ suicide bomb plot(s)” and, presumably, saved some of the (massive and undisclosed) cost of tracking the wannabe terrorists.
According to the sources linked above, this is the same “innocent Muslim community” which did not pass information concerning these gents onto the authorities, though to be fair most of this information was, as far as is known to date (23.02.2013), held by other family members.
Let me clear here: I am not stating, inferring or implying in any way that all, most or even many Muslims do or would harbour terrorists, or that they would not pass relevant information to the authorities, or that there was a general “community cover-up” in this case.
But I am still left wondering, now that it has been admitted that Project Champion (or something similar) would be beneficial for the Muslim communities of Birmingham, just what all the fuss was originally about and in who’s interest was the failure of “Project Champion”.

Update: 11.Apr.2013: The wife (Salma Kabal) of one of the “Three Lions” (Ashik Ali) now on trial for not reporting hubby to the Police. Ali joked about the film “Four Lions” to Salma as recorded in the main article. Another two members of the terrorist cell, Bahader Ali, 29, and Mohammed Rizwan, 34 also on on trial for terrorism charges, charged with “conduct in preparation of terrorist acts”, “entering into a funding arrangement for the purposes of terrorism” and “gathering information for terrorism“. If some one slaps unexpectedly, the person slapped may just ignore and forgive the aggressor. If the aggressor does it second time and a third time and keeps repeating the same act, the fellow slapped has to and should or can do few things
1.Confront the aggressor and ensure that he also gets slapped harder.( beat the crap out of moslem scum bags and islam)
2.Just run away from the scene.like the stupid hindus did from porkisthan and kashmir
3.Just peacefully discuss with him the dangers of attacking and immorality of the act.Just like some idiot secularists in India want to do!
4.Just Ignore them!
Which option would one like to take? My option is simple.Beat the crap out of every moslem scum bag!
The majority of Muslim terrorists and Jihadist do come from the Muslim community and Muslim families! Many Muslim families do harbor the terrorist elements of Islam, this is to be expected and of no great surprise.
Sahih Imam Bukhari Volume 8, Book 76, Number 491: Narrated ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr: Muhammad said, “A Muslim is the one who avoids harming Muslims with his tongue or his hands. And a Muhajir (emigrant) is the one who gives up all what al Lah (the God) has forbidden.”
Huh, Muslim majority areas of U.K.(Europe)?
It’s incredibly scary that no matter what Muslims do, they get a pass from the British Government and the police. The only way to get the message across: that Muslims do not make good neighbours, they are not prepared to live according to the laws and customs and culture of the country they’re in – even if they were born there – they do NOT promote community cohesion (it’s an old and tired buzz word in the UK), is to keep flagging it up on blogs, swamping MPs with emails, letters, petitions etc. and speak the truth to ordinary folks. I know British people are sick to the teeth of what Muslims are doing to this country – we all need to get our courage and stand up to them.
The families of the others involved who went for jihadi training and were ordered home should be charged with perverting the course of justice, for not handing them in to the Police.
I heard an interview with the Chief Constable of Birmingham and somebody from the Quilliam foundation, on Radio 4 – more of the same dissembling from Quilliam, and the Chief Constable waxed maudlin about how disadvantaged the three would be jihadis were…. I thought he was about to cry! Basically all the Chief Constable did was big up Project Champion and how it was good for community cohesion, blah blah blah.
Project Champion is just as useless as the Prevent programme, and when you consider that places like Tower Hamlets received over half a million pounds to “root out extremism”, from British taxpayers, and you look what’s happening in the Islamic State of Tower Hamlets – it’s no wonder at all that Muslims are sticking up two fingers to us.
There was a blog on the Daily Telegraph site (no comments allowed) in which the writer said the three who were planning the attack shouldn’t get life sentences because they hadn’t killed anybody! And this guy wasn’t Muslim….go figure!
Hello JohnMC Thanks for showing up the double standards surrounding this. I went to the link you gave, and read how the bombers’ families knew of their intent (how could they not know? This lot were too stupid to keep quiet about about their intentions). But the award for the Ostrich/Dhimmi of 2013 should definitely go to Assistant Chief Constable Marcus Beale for even contemplating ‘ideal scenarios’ in connection with Islamism (ideal for whom?) and for assuming that the families’ motives for bringing them home were not self-serving. Keeping them from harm indeed. Had their families wanted that and had they been halfway good citizens they would not have allowed them to go in the first place or would have blown the whistle on them immediately they did.
Ah Rosh, perhaps you are not familiar with the Islamic doctrine of “Sitr”.
The word “Sitr” itself is related to the Arabic word for a curtain or a veil, and carries the meaning of drawing a blind over something that is not to be revealed.
The doctrine of Sitr is related to the concept of “Aurah” or “dis-honour / shame”.
In simple terms when a person does something “shameful” or “dishonourable” within the Muslim community, it should be hushed up and only repeated offenders should be brought to (Islamic) justice. This is justified on the grounds that in the Hadith a duty is laid on Muslims to protect each other and each other’s honour.
Thus, according to Dr. Qaradawi, if someone assaulted another in a rage, got drunk, visited a prostitute, etc. then if he were exposed, he would be shamed. Under the doctrine of Sitr, in order to preserve the person’s “honour”, the offence should be covered up.
Note here that this “cover-up” applies to both criminal and immoral behaviour. This should not surprise us, since Islam rarely distinguishes the two, treating both types of reprehensible behaviour as crimes under Sharia Law.
Muslim children, teaches Qaradawi, should be taught from an early age to adopt the practice of Sitr if doing so will preserve the “honour” of fellow Muslims.
At first sight this is a doctrine which has somewhat to recommend it. It is the opposite of the “kiss-and-tell” attitude prevalent in much of the West, which can be damaging to put it mildly.
However, I suggest that it has a darker side.
Recall that one example of something to be covered-up was a criminal act – that of assault. How widely does this doctrine reach, to what level of criminality (and here in the West, particularly criminality against non-Muslims) should Sitr be applied?
Dr. Qaradawi has said: “The principle of Sitr requires that [all] such [shameful] behaviour, whether committed by you or someone else, remains forever hidden behind the veil [of Sitr].”
Does this mean that Muslims should not co-operate with Law enforcement agencies if a crime (which in these terms brings “shame”) has been committed by Muslims and perhaps especially so if the victims are non-Muslims (who are regarded as lesser mortals in Islam)?
Note also the key concept of “Honour” within this doctrine.
Somewhat simplistically, the doctrine of Sitr is all about preserving the “honour” of Muslims individually and hence the Umma collectively. Muslims are to be seen as being the “best community amongst mankind” (K3:110), no matter the truth of the matter.
Given the centrality of “honour”, are we then surprised that people who so flout the demands of “honour” are likely to be killed so as to restore this “honour” to their family, or that Muslims are often less than fully cooperative in Police investigations into crimes committed by Muslims, or that the widespread presence of hate-preachers in Mosques is not reported?
Jon MC thanks for this valuable insight.
I am thinking of the “Sitr” involved in keeping secret the grooming and sexual abuse of underage white girls by Muslim men on the scale it took place and what a blow to their “honour” it was to be convicted – how great their “aurah” must have been to be paraded in front of an infidel court and sent to prison.
Sitr and aurah also explains the head games these men undertook when confronted by what they had done.
Given what you write, it’s not surprising that these don’t co-operate with the police and that getting unequivocal condemnations of their behaviour from their community leaders is like pulling wisdom teeth.
Jon MC it’d be good if this knowledge and awareness could be force-fed, if necessary, to UK police forces and stupid politicians who cling to multiculturalism like drowning men to life rafts.
I beg to differ, slightly, Rosh.
I do not think that “Sitr” entered into the grooming of white girls – rather it is their view that all non-Muslims are either (A) worthless (and thus non-Muslim women worth even less – if that’s not impossible/ an oxymoron) or (B) they are legitimate “ghanima” (war-booty) because the non-Muslim population aren’t (all) behaving like Dhimmis which means that they can be attacked, or (C) it’s simple tribal supremacy – “we can have access to your females, you can’t have access to ours”.
Where you are quite right is in their belief that “it wasn’t our fault” – the sense of shame and the desire to cover-up their culpability once caught do reflect the Sitr/Aurah model well.
Of course, an “infidel” court has no ‘true’ jurisdiction over Islamists who acknowledge only Shariah law.
The question is then whether a Shariah-based court would convict. Given the experience of raped non-Muslim women in Pakistan (for example) I doubt it. Another reason for their anger.
Thanks Jon MC. The mindset of these Muslims is such that they refuse to allow into consciousness any awareness that they can ever be found to be in the wrong or to have done wrong. I can only begin to imagine the fury of the child-groomers that they were banged up by an infidel court.
Given that their views are so firmly entrenched, that they are so avoidant of anything which will cause them shame, and that reasoned argument and appeals to reality and cause/effect are unlikely to succeed, perhaps shaming them by broadcasting the facts when they are found to be in the wrong (ie public naming and shaming) is the best way to undermine them.
My misgivings are around the fact that they have not only convinced themselves that their distorted reality is true but have also convinced their very naive useful infidels who work tirelessly to peddle their distorted narrative.
Jon MC could you post here the link where Qaradawi preaches that children should be taught to lie to preserve the “honour” of Muslims?
Many thanks.

Thanks for this, Jon Mc
How typically Islamic for these to scream against surveillance, for the UK government, police forces, etc to take notice rather than tell them to go to hell, and remove the surveillance and pave the way for the antics of Fatty Irfan and his chums.
And I hear what you are saying that, in effect, we cannot know if and how many Muslims are planning terror or assisting the planners in the UK. That is thanks to the lunatic perversions of multiculturalism and political correctness perpetrated against their people by successive UK governments, many of whose MPs are unashamedly whoring their principles for the Muslim vote.
The families of these three and indeed everyone who knew what they planned should be slung into jail alongside them.
You write:
“So now, suddenly, project Champion isn’t about invading the privacy of Muslims nor is it driven by an “Islamophobic” agenda, it will “ensure the safety and security” of both Muslims and non-Muslims alike – just as I thought in 2010 when reportage of the objections was all over the media.”
What’s going on here? Why the sudden volte face? Is it fear-driven or simply expedient? Did this MP know about terrorism threats, or was he merely suspicious about them? If either or both are the case, why did he not act before? Why did he keep silent until these charmers were arrested?
Is he trying to portray Sparkhill as being comprised of good Muslim citizens? If so, he’s a dollar short and an hour late. Far more people in Sparkhill knew what these three were about than is comfortable to contemplate, and so far as I am concerned, I remain to be convinced that Mahmood’s call for the reinstatement of CCTV is anything other than taqiyya deflection and an example of the external locus of evaluation as well as an attempt to deflect responsibility for the terrorist plans from the community itself.
