The Expired Religion and the Arab Spring
I was expecting a gradual change in the public re-evaluation of their Islamic beliefs as education and intellectuals are on the increase, but such a positive attitude was surprisingly much faster than my expectations. Watching certain talk shows by Syrian intellectuals it is also amazing to hear them stipulate that many aspects of Islam cannot conform to modern world developments. The mere fact that such a sensitive subject is brought up indicates a drastic change in the attitude of the public on Islam. This expired religion cannot withstand the onslaught of democracy sought by the millions of Arab protesters, even if certain other Arab countries the when the revolts demanded total democracies but religion could remain as a future reference, such a combination of both cannot survive. As one revolt leader explained to me that even if religion remains in the future constitution it will ultimately be transformed into a mere décor and could never be used for the very simple reason that democracy and religion somehow negate each other. I am optimistic that Islam is on its way to become an ugly history for a huge number of people on our planet.
